Elimelech of Bethlehem going with his wife Noemi, and two sons, into the land of Moab, dies there. His sons marry wives of that country and die without issue. Noemi returns home with her daughter in law Ruth, who refuses to part with her.
In the days of one of the judges, when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land. And a man from Bethlehem in Judah departed to sojourn in the region of the Moabites with his wife and two children.1
