ἄθλησις, (εως, ἡ, contest, combat, (frequently from Polybius down); figuratively, ἄθλησις παθημάτων a struggle with sufferings, trials, Heb 10:32; (of martyrdom, Ignatius mart. 4; Clement, mart. 25).
