to take an oath
ἀνα-θεματίζω (ἀνίθεμα), [in LXX chiefly for חָרַם hi. (Num.21:2, 1Ki.15:3, al.), 1Ma.5:5 ;] to devote to destruction, declare or invoke anathema: absol., Mrk.14:71; ἐαντόν, to bind oneself under a curse: Act.23:12, 14 23:21 (cf. καταναθεματίζω, and on the occurrence of the word in π., see Deiss., LAE, 92 f.; MM, VGT, see word).† (AS)

ἀναθεματίζω; 1 aorist ἀνεθεμάτισα; (ἀνάθεμα, which see); a purely Biblical and ecclesiastical word, to declare anathema or accursed; in the Sept. equivalent to הֶחֱרִים to devote to destruction (Jos 6:21, etc.; 1Ma 5:5); ἑαυτόν to declare oneself liable to the severest divine penalties, Act 23:12; Act 23:21; ἀναθέματι ἀναθεματίζειν (Deu 13:15; Deu 20:17 (Winers Grammar, § 54, 3; Buttmann, 184 (109))) ἑαυτόν, followed by an infinitive, to bind oneself under a curse to do something, Act 23:14. absolutely, to asseverate with direful imprecations: Mar 14:71.
