Vivir en Jerusalén significaba abandonar la propiedad adquirida en otro lugar y exponerse al peligro de perder la vida, puesto que la ciudad estaba todavía amenazada por muchos enemigos, sobre todo los samaritanos y edomitas. Fuera de esto, Jerusalén tenía pocas casas, debido a que la reconstrucción se limitaba a las murallas y edificios más indispensables.
