ἀνθύπατος, ἀνθυπάτου, ὁ (see the preceding word), proconsul: Act 13:7-8; Act 13:12; Act 18:12 L T Tr WH; Act 19:38. The emperor Augustus divided the Roman provinces into senatorial and imperial. The former were presided over by proconsuls; the latter were administered by legates of the emperor, sometimes called also propraetors.
