La expresión valle de Avén (valle de la inanidad, o sea, del ídolo) caracteriza a Damasco como población impía. De ahí que aludiendo al ídolo de Betel, Oseas constantemente diga Betaven (casa del ídolo), en vez de Betel o Beth-El, que quiere decir casa de Dios. Bet-Edén: alusión a la vida lujosa de la ciudad. Kir: situada, como creen los arqueólogos, entre Babilonia y Media, adonde la población de Damasco será deportada por los asirios. La Vulgata dice Cirene.
