  1. 2 s. Poco sabemos meditar hoy sobre esta asombrosa elección de Dios (Salmo 147, 8 s. y nota) y esa predilección que le hizo destrozar por Israel pueblos y reyes (Salmo 134, 8-12; 135, 10-24). Os visitaré, para juzgaros. Al privilegio de ser el pueblo escogido, responden mayores deberes, mayor responsabilidad y más severo castigo de las infracciones a la santa Ley de Dios. “Antes de anunciar más detalladamente los pormenores del castigo, el profeta emplea siete imágenes tomadas de la vida ordinaria que parecen tener por objeto demostrar que sus oráculos vienen de Dios y que nada hace ni habla sin el consentimiento de Él” (Crampón). Si Dios anuncia un juicio, el profeta no puede callar sin faltar a su sagrada misión; y lo anunciado se cumplirá infaliblemente, porque el profeta y Dios son de la misma compañía (versículo 3).

  1. 4. Sobre el Señor como león véase 1, 2 y nota. “Responde aquí a una secreta objeción que le hacen a Amós: Si tú eres pastor, ¿quién te ha metido a ser profeta? Véanse los versículos 6, 7, 8: El león prorrumpe en rugidos cuando quiere echarse sobre la presa. Así cuando Dios amenaza, es que va aparejando el cumplimiento de lo que anuncia. No en vano ruge el león de Judá” (Scío). Nótese que la profecía empieza con el rugido de Dios (1, 2), expresión que suele manifestar la ira contra los enemigos de su pueblo (cf. Isaías 42, 13; Jeremías 25, 30 ss.; Oseas 11, 10 s., etc.). El león de Judá victorioso, es nombre que se da a Jesucristo en su segunda venida (Apocalipsis 5, 5).

  1. 7. Dios trata a los profetas como amigos suyos (Génesis 18, 17; véase Mateo 10, 41). Los llama siervos, es decir, fieles ejecutores de lo que oyen, aunque los hombres no les den crédito (cf. Isaías 53, 1 y nota). Y aquí vemos que, por amor nuestro, el Señor revela sus secretos planes a los profetas, para que puedan comunicárnoslos a fin de que no nos sorprendan.   1. 8. ¿Quién no profetizará? ¿Qué habría sido de Nínive si Jonás hubiera insistido en no profetizar? (Jonás 1, 2 ss.; 3, 4 ss.). ¡Cuántas pobres almas que no saben hoy nada de estas cosas, se convertirían como Nínive, si las oyeran! “Ay de mí si no evangelizare”, dice San Pablo (I Corintios 9, 16). Véase Ezequiel 3, 16; 33, 7 y notas. Así como merece la muerte el que habla falsamente en nombre de Dios y anuncia cosas que Él no ha dicho (Deuteronomio 18, 20; cf. Jeremías 23, 16 ss. y nota), así también es terrible infidelidad la del que pretende huir, como Jonás, de la misión divina (Jonás 1, 3-9 y notas; cf. Jeremías 20, 9).
