2 1Y el Señor entregó en sus manos a Joakim, rey de Judá, y parte de los vasos de la Casa de Dios. Los llevó (Nabucodonosor) al país de Sinear, a la casa de su dios; y puso los vasos en la casa del tesoro de su dios.

Los jóvenes fueron instruidos en las ciencias de los caldeos, no solamente en la lengua corriente, que en aquel tiempo era la aramea, el idioma de los habitantes de Aram o de la Siria, sino también en la antigua, que Daniel llama aquí caldea y que es la que se ha conservado en las inscripciones cuneiformes (cf. 2, 4 y nota). La instrucción abarcaba, además, la astrología y las ciencias mágicas.
4 algunos niños que no tuviesen ningún defecto, de hermosa figura, instruidos en toda sabiduría, dotados de saber, prudentes, inteligentes y aptos para estar en el palacio del rey y aprender la escritura y la lengua de los caldeos.

Daniel era entonces un adolescente. De ahí que los sucesos de su libro abarquen casi tres cuartos de siglo, desde Nabucodonosor hasta Darío el Medo (6, 1) y Ciro el Persa (cf. 10, 1). Su vida, que alcanzó honores casi reales (2, 46 ss.), llegó hasta el fin de la cautividad —en el cual sin duda alguna influyó como instrumento divino—, de modo que, habiendo sido contemporáneo de Jeremías y de Ezequiel (Ezequiel 14, 20; 28, 3), lo fue también de Esdras y de Zorobabel.

Como expresa San Crisóstomo, el derecho de dar nombre equivale a ejercer el dominio y es signo de señorío sobre otro. Significa a la vez la recepción de los cuatro nobles hebreos en el pueblo caldeo, y el empeño por desvincularlos de Israel, pues sus nuevos nombres tienen vinculación con los dioses babilónicos (Bel, Nebo, etc.). Daniel significa: “mi juez (mi protector) es Dios”. Baltasar (o Belsasar según la transcripción hebraica) se traduce como una parodia del anterior: “Bel protege su vida”. Es de imaginar la repugnancia con que lo llevaría quien tan fiel había de ser al verdadero Dios de Israel (versículos 8-16, etc.). Cf. el cambio de nombre de Zorobabel (Esdras 1, 8 y nota) y el de José en Egipto (Génesis 41, 45).
Daniel observa la Ley mosaica
8 1Daniel se propuso en su corazón no contaminarse con los manjares escogidos del rey, ni con el vino que él bebía; por lo cual pidió al prefecto de los eunucos que no le (obligara) a contaminarse.

El éxito confirma la fe confiada de Daniel, y nos muestra cómo ya entonces Yahvé daba todo “por añadidura”, como dijo Jesús (Mateo 6, 33), al que buscase ser fiel a la Ley. La observancia de los preceptos mosaicos referentes a la alimentación era más grave de lo que hoy suponemos después de escuchar a San Pablo (Colosenses 2, 16-23). A los que se extrañan de que los jóvenes hebreos rechazasen los manjares de los caldeos, pero no sus ciencias, responde San Jerónimo: “Aprenden ellos, no para seguir, sino para juzgar y convencer; aprenden la doctrina de los caldeos con el mismo propósito que había llevado a Moisés a estudiar las ciencias de los egipcios.”
16 Desde entonces Malasar se llevaba sus manjares escogidos y el vino que habían de beber, y les daba legumbres.

Dios concedió: Estas palabras bastan para responder a los que se sorprenden de que Daniel pueda ser el autor de este Libro, donde varias veces se le elogia (cf. 5, 11; 6, 4; 13, 45). Reconoce él simplemente, como lo hizo José (Génesis 40, 8), y Salomón, y San Pablo, y María Inmaculada, las “grandezas” que Dios obra en él (cf. Lucas 1, 48 s. y notas). Pero no lo hubo más fiel en dar al Señor toda la gloria (2, 18 ss.; cf. Ezequiel 28, 3 y nota). La humildad es simplicidad de niño ante Dios, y no mojigatería. Esa sinceridad es lo que Dios amó en David, y lo que el mismo Dios elogia en Daniel (cf. I Macabeos 2, 60; Ezequiel 14, 20). Daniel recibió un don especial de Dios, como José en Egipto (Génesis 40, 1 ss.; 41, 1 ss.): el don de sueños proféticos y el don de interpretarlos (véase Eclesiástico 34, 1 ss. y notas); don sumamente apreciado en Babilonia (cf. 2, 1 ss.).
