Circunstancias de la primera visión

El año trigésimo: quizá de la era babilónica instituida por Nabucodonosor, es decir, en el año 593, quinto del destierro del rey Jeconías. Es este un punto muy discutido, y lo más seguro parece admitir que aquí se indica simplemente la edad del profeta. Cobar (hoy Chabur) se llama un tributario del Éufrates, en cuyas riberas se encontraban los desterrados del reino de Israel (IV Reyes 17, 6; 18, 11; I Paralipómenos 5, 26). Pero más probablemente se trata aquí del canal grande situado entre Nippur y Babilonia, que llevaba el nombre de Nahru Kabaru (Río Grande), hoy Schatt en Nil.

Esta grandiosa y célebre visión de Dios no es la única que nos ofrecen las Sagradas Escrituras. Podría estudiarse quizá una “iconografía bíblica de Dios” a través de los datos que contienen esas distintas visiones o teofanías, desde la zarza ardiente (Éxodo 3, 2 ss.), hasta el trono de Dios según la suprema Revelación hecha a San Juan en Apocalipsis capítulos 4 y 5 (véase la nota siguiente). En algunas se distingue claramente las divinas Personas del Padre y del Hijo. En otras, como en el éxtasis de Isaías (Isaías 6, 1), el profeta ve a Dios en forma humana sentado en trono real, y no lo llama Yahvé como suele llamarse al Padre (cf. Juan 8, 54 y nota), sino Adonai, o sea “el Señor”, como San Pablo llama a Jesús a diferencia del Padre (cf. I Corintios 1, 3; 8, 6, etc.), lo cual parece querer confirmar San Juan cuando nos dice que en dicho pasaje (Isaías 6, 9 s.) Isaías vio su gloria (la de Cristo) y anunció la ceguera que existiría a este respecto (Juan 12, 39-41). Torbellino, nube, fuego, indican la presencia de Dios (véase versículo 26 s. y nota; cf. Éxodo 13, 21; III Reyes 8, 10; 19, 11 ss.; Nahúm 1, 3; Mateo 17, 5; Hechos 1, 9). Un metal brillante (La Vulgata: apariencia de electro): traducción aproximativa de una palabra hebrea cuyo sentido es oscuro. Otros vierten: refulgencia de bronce acicalado; una imagen de ámbar; bronce en ignición, etc.
Los cuatro animales misteriosos

Cuatro seres, vivientes: Otra traducción: cuatro animales: Cf. Apocalipsis 4, 7 s. Es la visión de los querubines (cf. 10, 14-22), espíritus angélicos que formaban el carro del Señor Dios (Salmo 17, 11), quien “se sienta sobre los querubines” (I Reyes 4, 5; Salmo 79, 2; Isaías 37, 16). Estaban representados, tanto en el Arca (cf. Éxodo 25, 18 ss. y nota), como en el Oráculo del Templo de Salomón (cf. III Reyes 6, 23 ss.); allí en esculturas de oro puro, labrado a martillo; aquí de madera de olivo revestida de oro, etc., siendo de notar que tales representaciones plásticas constituyen una excepción en el culto de Israel, pues, por alejar al pueblo de la idolatría, en que tantas veces había de caer, Dios le había prohibido tales imágenes (véase Éxodo 20, 4; Deuteronomio 5, 8; Baruc 6, 1 ss. y notas). También se sirvió Dios de Querubines para custodiar las puertas del paraíso terrenal (véase Génesis 3, 24 y nota). Su semejanza gráfica con las figuras aladas asirio-babilónicas (Karibu) y quizá también con las que guardan el sarcófago del famoso Tutancamón en El Cairo, hace suponer la influencia de la tradición edénica. En esos pueblos, así como en otras religiones orientales, y señaladamente en los pensadores griegos, suelen hallarse ecos del Antiguo Testamento, según lo atestigua Filón de Alejandría, judío helenizante, y también los Padres de la Iglesia. Lo cual no obsta a que Dios pudiese mostrar a Ezequiel la visión hecha con elementos visuales que el profeta hubiese conocido habitualmente en Babilonia. No de otro modo son las representaciones que San Juan describe en el Apocalipsis, traducidas necesariamente a las limitadas apariencias que el hombre puede describir (como lo fue la misma Transfiguración del Señor en Marcos 9, 3 etc.), ya que Dios mismo enseña que ningún hombre puede ver directamente su Rostro sin morir (Éxodo 33, 20 y nota). De ahí que San Pablo no intente siquiera expresar lo que vio en su arrebato a lo que él llama el tercer cielo, y haga constar que no sabe si fue en su cuerpo o fuera del cuerpo (II Corintios 12, 2 ss.), citando además, en I Corintios 2, 9, las palabras de Isaías 64, 4 para mostrar que nunca hombre alguno vio ni pudo concebir lo que Dios prepara a los que lo aman; y en otra parte enseña que ahora solo vemos como por un espejo y oscuramente (I Corintios 13, 12). En cuanto a la diferencia entre los Querubines y los Serafines cf. Isaías 6, 2. Los cuatro seres animados que vio San Juan (Ap. 4, 6 ss.) tienen apariencia semejante a los Querubines, pero sus alas no son cuatro sino seis como las de los Serafines (cf. versículo 23 y nota), y cantan como estos el trisagio: “Santo, Santo, Santo.” Por lo expuesto vemos que la aplicación que de estas visiones desde el siglo II (San Ireneo) se hace a los cuatro Evangelistas es puramente simbólica y acomodaticia.

Parece naturalmente prodigioso que puedan andar a un tiempo hacia los cuatro frentes, sin separarse ni desintegrarse. Hay aquí sin duda algo que, muy por encima de toda geometría euclidiana, y de toda concepción einsteiniana, es decir, más allá de lo que los matemáticos han podido concebir, demuestra que las cualidades de Dios, que Él nos revelará un día, se liberan de los conceptos de espacio y de tiempo que condicionan nuestros conceptos de orden natural; así como toda sucesión de tiempo desaparece en el presente perpetuo de la eternidad, así también quedará superada inimaginablemente nuestra noción actual de espacio y movimiento, y entonces entendemos, “sub specie aeternitatis”, lo que ahora supera a nuestra capacidad de concepción. Por eso el contacto con los Profetas bíblicos es de valor insuperable para despertar y avivar en nosotros el sentido del misterio (cf. I Corintios 2, 7) que, según lo hace notar Garrigou-Lagrange, está ausente con frecuencia del espíritu de muchos cuya religiosidad solo se cifra en las “prácticas” y tiende a mirar como poco menos que supersticiones las realidades de la vida sobrenatural, como por ejemplo los misterios del Apocalipsis. El Papa Pío IX citaba este pasaje ante una peregrinación de Toulouse el 30 de abril de 1876, proponiéndolo como un símbolo de la armonía del matrimonio cristiano, en el cual no ha de ser obstáculo la diversidad de temperamentos, pues vemos aquí que “la ferocidad del león marchaba de acuerdo con la prudencia del hombre, y la agilidad del águila con la lentitud del buey”.

Este firmamento que se extiende sobre los Querubines como plataforma del Trono de Dios (versículo 26), recuerda el oro transparente como cristal, que forma el piso de la Jerusalén celestial (Apocalipsis 21, 19 y 21). Una imagen natural y sugestiva para nuestra esperanza de “esa Jerusalén de arriba que es nuestra Madre” (Gálatas 4, 26), parece querer brindarnos Dios a menudo en esos esplendores, como de fuego y oro cristalino que el sol presenta en la hora del crepúsculo. Quizá por eso se llama hora de la oración, porque ese espectáculo, tan llamativo con sus colores de insuperable pureza —aunque solo suele ser observado y admirado de unos pocos (cf. Salmo 8, 2 y nota) — parece atraernos, al final del día transitorio, para que, en esa otra biblia que es la naturaleza, olvidemos todo lo que pasa, al recordar la belleza de Dios y la felicidad de nuestro destino eterno. Dios nos ha reservado estas maravillas para el final de nuestra existencia, que terminará en un instante cuando llegue el esperado día en que Jesús, después de habernos preparado un lugar y reservado la corona de la justicia venga, como Juez supremo, a tomar hacia Él (Juan 14, 3; I Tesalonicenses 4, 13-17) a todos aquellos “que aman su venida” (II Timoteo 4, 8).
