  1. 1. Toma un ladrillo: En Babilonia se usaba barro en forma de ladrillos, como material de escribir. Ezequiel, por el silencio impuesto (3, 26), no pudo hacer comunicaciones a otros sino por escrito. Lo que sigue es una descripción profética del sitio de Jerusalén que se verificó en 588-587, es decir, del segundo sitio (IV Reyes 25, 1 ss.; II Paralipómenos 36, 17 ss.; Jeremías 39, 8 ss.), pues diez años antes había tenido lugar el primer sitio (IV Reyes 24, 10 ss.), en el cual el mismo Ezequiel había sido deportado a Babilonia donde escribía.

  1. 4. Llevarás la culpa de ellos, es decir, en lugar de tus compatriotas, como si tú tuvieras la culpa. El sumo mérito, la suma bondad de Cristo en la Redención, no reside tanto en los dolores de su Cuerpo Santísimo —en lo cual no pretendió darnos una lección de estoicismo (cf. Salmo 68, 15 y nota)— sino en su humillación, es decir, en su abandono de las prerrogativas de Príncipe divino (Filipenses 2, 6 ss.), en el maltrato, las injurias y la vergonzosa desnudez con que fue expuesto en la Cruz a la burla de todos, y principalmente, en el acto interior de aceptación de la culpa. Porque en ese momento Él no era un generoso héroe que es condenado inocente y recoge el aplauso ajeno y propio por su actitud; era el sumo culpable, hecho, todo Él, pecado (II Corintios 5, 21), y hecho maldición (Gálatas 3, 13; Deuteronomio 21, 23). En esto estribó el sumo sacrificio de Cristo: en que, para poder reparar la culpa, fue necesario que la tomase sobre Sí, como si Él hubiese cometido contra su Padre, a quien amaba infinitamente, todos los delitos pasados y futuros de la humanidad. En esa aceptación, en el ensuciarse a Sí mismo, Él, que es la Limpieza misma (Hebreos 1, 3), en esa repugnancia indecible que sufrió dentro del abismo de cieno en que se sumergía, en eso estuvo el fondo de la Pasión Redentora. Por eso llama suyos nuestros delitos (véase Salmo 37, 4 y nota), y por eso mereció el abandono del Padre en manos de sus enemigos: porque sus delitos clamaban contra Él (Salmo 21, 2). Por eso, en el símbolo de la salud, Él fue figurado no ya como cordero, sino como serpiente (Números 21, 9 y Juan 3, 14); porque Él ya no era hombre sino gusano vil (Salmo 21, 7). He aquí el significado de este episodio en la vida del fidelísimo Ezequiel: debe cargar con la iniquidad de su pueblo, no ciertamente para redimirlo, sino como figura de Cristo, fuera del cual nadie es redentor (Hechos 4, 12). Solo nos queda recoger la lección para nuestra alma y recordar que, si nos llega providencialmente la ocasión de cargar, inocentes, con una culpa ajena, esto será sin duda lo más grande que podremos hacer a imitación de Cristo, y valdrá tanto cuanto sea el amor con que al hacerlo nos unamos a lo que hizo Él.   1. 5 ss. El acostarse sobre el lado izquierdo, que simboliza el tiempo de la maldad de Israel y que es de 390 días, corresponde a otros tantos años. La versión griega pone 190 en vez de 390. Por la maldad de Judá, el profeta ha de acostarse sobre el lado derecho durante 40 días, que simbolizan 40 años. Las cifras corresponden más o menos a la duración del reino, inclusive el cautiverio, de Israel (reino del norte) y del reino de Judá (desde la caída de Jerusalén hasta el fin del cautiverio). Se guarda el mismo simbolismo si sumamos las dos cifras, cuyo total de 430 años equivaldría al tiempo del destierro de Egipto, figura del cautiverio babilónico, incluyendo los 40 años del tránsito del desierto.
