  1. 1 ss. Esta visión es retrospectiva. Dios muestra al profeta el culto idolátrico con que los judíos habían contaminado el Templo. “Lo que Dios reveló a Jeremías para los judíos que quedaban en la patria, eso mismo reveló al profeta Ezequiel para los exilados: a fin de quitarles (a unos y a otros) la vana esperanza que tenían en la perpetuidad del reino y del Templo, la cual los apartaba de la verdadera conversión, y anunciarles la ruina de la ciudad y del Templo y cultivar la semilla de expectación mesiánica en medio de las angustias del destierro” (Simón-Prado). Véase Jeremías 30, 3 y nota. Conviene recordar aquí la división de toda la profecía de Ezequiel, que indicamos en la introducción. Es de notar que Dios revela al Profeta, en 24, 25 ss., que podrá hablar y no será más mudo (cf. 3, 26 s.) el día en que un fugitivo de Jerusalén le anuncie la caída de la Ciudad Santa. Desde entonces él se pone a vaticinar contra los paganos (capítulos 25-32), hasta que sucede aquella caída, según podemos ver, en 33, 21 ss. Después Dios le abre la boca nuevamente y, previa una breve advertencia contra los que quedaron en Jerusalén (33, 23-29), y otra contra sus oyentes de Caldea (33, 30-33), vemos que en adelante Ezequiel se pone decididamente, empezando con la gran profecía mesiánica del Pastor (capítulo 34), a anunciar en forma consoladora la gran restauración, “que antes solo había dejado entrever en 11, 16 s.; 16, 60; 17, 22 s.; 20, 40 s.; 28, 25 s.” (Crampón). De ahí que toda esta serie de visiones, desde este capítulo 8, sean para mostrar, ante los emigrados en Babilonia —o a la generación siguiente, como algunos suponen— la necesidad en que Dios se vio de quebrantar a su pueblo a causa de su tremenda prevaricación. Nótese que en el capítulo 33, 7 ss. se reitera a Ezequiel su carácter de centinela de Israel que se le había dado en 3, 16 ss. antes de imponerle aquel silencio en 3, 22-27.

El ídolo colocado en el Templo es llamado del celo porque toda forma de idolatría provoca los celos de Dios, y es como un adulterio, un quebrantamiento de la alianza que el pueblo de Israel había hecho con Dios (cf. 5, 13 y nota). Parece que ese ídolo era el de Baal o Astarté, dioses introducidos en, el Templo por el impío rey Manasés (IV Reyes 21, 3 ss.; II Paralipómenos 33, 7). “Algunos creen que era el ídolo de Adonis, llamado ídolo de celotipia, pues según la fábula o mitología, Marte hizo matar a Adonis, a quien amaba Venus, por celos que tuvo” (Páramo). Josías había purificado el Santuario (II Paralipómenos 33, 15), pero sus sucesores volvieron a contaminarlo con estatuas paganas. Véase al respecto Baruc capítulo 6 y notas.
