Cf. Jeremías 31, 29. Este proverbio, aplicado a los cautivos de Babilonia, quería decir: somos castigados por los pecados de nuestros padres, no por los nuestros. Consiguientemente caían en la desesperación, como ante una fatalidad sin remedio. Y como no se creían culpables, no pensaban en arrepentirse de corazón. De ahí que el profeta haga notar la responsabilidad personal de cada uno por su propia conducta, y luego insista en hacerles saber que Dios está deseando perdonar a todo el que se arrepiente (versículo 22-32). Este capítulo contiene grande enseñanza espiritual también para nosotros.

Véase sobre esto Éxodo 20, 5 y el comentario. Todas las almas son mías: Adorable expresión de amor. No hay mayor muestra de amor e interés por otro, que decirle: tú eres mío (cf. Hechos 27, 23). No es esto un alarde del poder de Dios, que por sabio se calla, sino de amor e interés por cada alma. Todas son mías y no quiero perder ninguna (versículo 32). Declaración tanto más notable aquí, cuanto que Israel era objeto de una elección colectiva (cf. Hechos 15, 14 y nota). Jesús nos dirá más tarde el valor que esas almas tienen para Dios, revelándonos que ellas son el don que el Padre hizo al Hijo como lo más precioso que existe (Juan 10, 29 s.; 17, 9 ss. y notas); que en salvarlas y divinizarlas está toda la gloria que el Hijo puede dar al Padre (Juan 17, 2 y nota), aumentándole así la familia divina (Romanos 8, 29); por lo cual, lejos de rechazarse el pecador, es indecible la alegría de los cielos por uno solo que se arrepiente (Lucas 15, 10 y nota). No atribuyamos al Padre de las misericordias (II Corintios 1, 3) un rostro falso y duro (cf. Salmo 138, 1 y nota), porque entonces no lo podremos amar, ni siquiera arrepentirnos, pues dudaríamos de su perdón. De ahí que ese empeño por llevarnos a la desesperación, sea la gran arma del diablo y de sus agentes, como lo muestra Dios aquí y en la indignación que manifiesta contra los falsos profetas que así obran en Jeremías 23, 33 s. Véase las palabras de Jesús en Mateo 9, 13 y 12, 7; Lucas 6, 36; 19, 10; Juan 3, 16 s., etc. Morirá: como observa Fillion, se refiere a la muerte corporal, como el mayor de los males de esta vida (versículos 9 y 17, etc.). En efecto, la muerte es el castigo del pecado (cf. Sabiduría 1, 16 y nota) y aun en el Nuevo Testamento vemos aplicado este concepto (I Corintios 5, 5; 11, 30; I Pedro 3, 20; 4, 6). Téngase presente, además, que en la religión de Israel solo se esperaba la resurrección que traería el Mesías (cf. Job 19, 23 ss.) y por tanto no se ponía el acento sobre la inmortalidad del alma (cf. Salmo 6, 6 y nota), cuyo premio o castigo inmediato a la muerte era ignorado, como observa Vigouroux.

He aquí algunas de esas disposiciones sociales que nunca pierden su importancia: la devolución de las prendas (Éxodo 22, 26; Deuteronomio 24, 6 y nota, etc.), la prohibición de la usura y aun del interés, que también los Padres y Santo Tomás combaten como ilícito, etc. Cf. En este sentido la legislación de Israel nos da ejemplo de una perfección que, aun prescindiendo del espíritu religioso que la inspira, supera incomparablemente a la de todo orden jurídico, antiguo o moderno, sin excluir el Derecho Romano, para el cual poco se le toma en cuenta que sus disposiciones reflejan ya algunas influencias cristianas. Vivirá, y será feliz por haber observado esas leyes de Dios, no ya como un premio aparte, sino porque son normas puestas por la amante sabiduría divina para la felicidad nuestra de modo que “en guardarlos queda abundantemente galardonado” (Salmo 18, 12). Muchas veces intenta Dios inculcarnos esta maravillosa verdad, que muy pocos suelen creer. Véase Salmo 24, 8 y nota; Juan 13, 17. Santo Tomás observa que la Ley antigua, según el sentido exterior, prometía solo cosas del orden temporal, aunque según el sentido espiritual prometía también las espirituales y la vida eterna. Y es de recordar que Jesús no ha suprimido aquellas promesas temporales, como la vemos en Mateo 6, 33.
10 1Pero si engendra a un hijo violento que vierte sangre y comete contra su hermano alguna de estas cosas,

Notemos que Dios ofrece dos ejemplos inversos para dejar bien clara la independencia de las almas: el padre bueno que tiene un hijo degenerado, y viceversa. Es que Dios es el único dueño de las almas (versículo 4 y nota). Y también se reserva Él hacer misericordia a quien quiere (Romanos 9, 15), como lo ha hecho muchas veces por amor de sus amigos (véase Hechos de los Apóstoles 27, 24 y nota) o por las oraciones de estos (Job 42, 8). De modo que los padres o hijos cristianos jamás han de desesperar de la salvación de los suyos. Cf. I Juan 5, 16 y nota.

El Señor da un paso más en la revelación de su misericordia. No solamente no responderá el hombre por los pecados de otro, sino que Dios le perdonará también los pecados propios. Basta que se arrepienta, mostrando con su cambio de vida la sinceridad de ese arrepentimiento (cf. Isaías 44, 22). Esta grandísima noticia del perdón, que ya parecería un versículo del Evangelio, comporta aún, como se ve, la justificación, la cual, según enseña San Pablo, nadie consiguió por la Ley antigua, “siendo evidente que nadie se justifica por la Ley” (Gálatas 3, 11), porque ella dice solamente: “el que cumple estas cosas vivirá por ellas” (Gálatas 3, 12). Ahora bien, como nadie es capaz de cumplirlas con capacidad propia (Romanos 3, 20; 10, 3; Filipenses 3, 9), en vano ofreció la Ley esa justificación por las obras, ya que ningún hijo de Adán llegaba a merecerla (cf. Juan 7, 19), por lo cual dice que antes estábamos bajo la maldición de la Ley, pues maldito era, según la misma Ley, todo el que no la cumplía íntegramente (Gálatas 3, 10; Deuteronomio 27, 26). Entonces nos muestra el gran Apóstol cómo Cristo, único que pudo ser justo por el perfecto cumplimiento de la Ley porque tenía santidad propia, nos redimió de aquella maldición al obsequiarnos sus propios méritos mediante la fe en Él. Pues esa fe en Aquel sin el cual nada podemos (Juan 15, 5), es lo que nos obtiene la gracia (Efesios 2, 8), para que toda la gloria sea solo de Él (Efesios 2, 9). También durante el Antiguo Testamento pudo existir la fe, pero no fundada en la Ley de Moisés, sino en la Promesa mesiánica hecha a Abrahán, y fue esta fe, y no la Ley, lo que justificó a los santos de Israel (cf. Romanos capítulo 4). Vemos así el abismo que queda todavía entre la misericordia del perdón que aquí se ofrece al que se arrepiente y cumple la Ley y la misericordia que Jesús ofreció luego al que se arrepiente y cree al Evangelio (Marcos 1, 15), es decir, a semejante Noticia Buena y asombrosa de que por esa fe en el Hijo de Dios recibimos la gracia del Espíritu Santo que nos hace capaces de vivir según la nueva Ley de caridad. Ese Espíritu no es otro que el de Jesús, que se nos comunica y que, haciéndonos hijos del Padre como es Él (Gálatas 4, 6), nos hace vivir, como Él, vida de hijos amantes y no ya de siervos (Efesios 1, 5; Romanos 8, 15).

Compárese este versículo y el 31 s. con el 33, 11 y 17, etc., donde se vuelve sobre esta consoladora revelación de la voluntad salvífica de Dios. ¿Qué sería de nosotros si así no fuera, y si, en vez de tener corazón de Padre, mostrase Él un rigor inexorable y nos tratase con la solemnidad que corresponde a Su Majestad? Véase, en cambio, la llaneza y humildad con que en el versículo 25 desciende a dar explicaciones ¡como si Él tuviera que justificarse! Un conocido autor moderno comenta este versículo diciendo que los judíos no se acordaban bastante de la infinita misericordia del Señor y por eso comprendían difícilmente estas cosas que a nosotros nos parecen tan simples... ¿Estamos seguros de que las comprendemos y las creemos más que ellos? Dice Santo Tomás que “Dios no hace misericordia sino por causa de su amor, en cuanto nos ama como algo propio suyo”; y en otra parte añade, con profunda verdad, que “nada es más adecuado para mover al amor, que la conciencia que se tiene de ser amado”. Por tanto, si los hombres de hoy creyeran verdaderamente que Dios es bueno, y que esa bondad procede del amor que nos tiene, es evidente que lo amarían a su vez, y por Él se amarían entre ellos, y la santidad llenaría el mundo. Entretanto, la humanidad actual no solo produce frutos como la segunda guerra mundial, sino que, al término total de esta, los pensadores proclamaron una vez más su fe en la bondad del hombre y en el continuo progreso moral del mundo, sin sentir la necesidad de que nuestro siglo practique esa humillación interior que Dios exige aquí (versículo 21 y 31) para que pueda haber conversión y vida.
