El agua que sale del Templo
1 1Después me hizo volver a la entrada de la Casa; y vi aguas que salían por debajo del umbral de la Casa al oriente; pues la fachada de la Casa daba al oriente. Las aguas descendían debajo del lado derecho de la Casa, al sur del altar.

Las promesas que comenzaron en el capítulo 33 (cf. 33, 1 y nota), después de referirse, como señala Crampón, a la “restauración del pueblo de Dios” (capítulos 33-37) y al “triunfo final sobre las naciones” (capítulos 38- 39), terminan con “el nuevo Reino de Dios” (capítulos 40-48). Esta última sección, que se ha ocupado hasta aquí del nuevo Templo y de su culto, muestra ahora —antes de indicar los nuevos límites de la Tierra Santa (versículo 13-20) y el reparto de Palestina entre las doce tribus (47, 21; 48, 29)— las grandes bendiciones que saldrán de aquel Templo y que están simbolizadas por el misterioso torrente. Martini hace notar que estas aguas son las que el Profeta anunció en 36, 25 s., y que de las mismas habla Zacarías 14, 8 ss.; Isaías 12, 3 y 55, 1. Los modernos señalan además Salmo 45, 5; Isaías 27, 3; 35, 7; 43, 20; 44, 3; Jeremías 31, 12; Oseas 14, 6; Joel 3, 18; Amós 9, 13; Zacarías 13, 1 ss.; Apocalipsis 22, 1 ss., etc. Las aguas salían por la puerta oriental (cf. 43, 2 y nota). El nuevo Salterio ordenado por Pío XII (cf. 38, 18 y nota) hace notar esa santidad anunciada al Templo, “habitación terrena de Dios” (Salmo 92, 5), y refiere el Salmo 98 especialmente a los frutos de santidad que de él salen cuando el Señor “presente en el Templo, sentado sobre Querubines, hace suyo el reino sobre todos los pueblos, del cual es propia la justicia, que ejercerá en el pueblo de Israel”, mostrando que “son invitados a entrar al Templo no solo los israelitas sino todos los habitantes de la tierra, porque Dios es el Creador y Pastor de todos” (Introducción al Salmo 99). San Jerónimo dice de este río misterioso: “No hay más que un río que mana debajo del trono de Dios, y es la gracia del Espíritu Santo; y esta gracia del Espíritu Santo está encerrada en las Sagradas Escrituras.” El lado derecho marcaba para los hebreos el sur.

Texto usado por la Liturgia en la aspersión del agua bendita. En sentido espiritual los santos Padres lo han aplicado con mucha razón a la Palabra de Dios (cf. nota 1 y Apocalipsis 22, 1 y nota) y a la gracia y dones del Espíritu Santo, a los sacramentos y a las bendiciones que nos ha conquistado y merecido Jesucristo, Él mismo habló, en efecto, del “agua viva” de su Palabra (Juan 4, 10) y del “río de agua viva” que mana de su seno y que es el Espíritu Santo (cf. Juan 7, 37 ss. y nota). A través de todo el libro de Ezequiel podemos ver figurado a Cristo como Aquel que es la vida (Juan 1, 4; 14, 6) y que comunica esa vida (Juan 3, 16; I Juan 4, 9). Desde el ímpetu vital que se revela en la visión de los Querubines y de la gloria de Dios en el capítulo 1, hasta la resurrección de los huesos en el capítulo 37, todo es vida y todo habla de dar la vida. “¡Vive, vive!” se le dice a Israel que yace envuelta en la miseria de su propia sangre (16, 6). Vida es lo que asegura el varón con vestidura de lino (9, 2 ss.) cuando marca en la frente con el signo de la cruz a los que están amenazados de muerte. Puesto que el Señor Dios no quiere la muerte del impío, sino que se convierta y viva: ¿por qué había de morir la Casa de Israel? (33, 11 ss.). Así cuando llegue su tiempo, el buen Pastor apacentará Él mismo a sus ovejas para que vivan y no las mate el lobo por culpa de los malos pastores (capítulo 34), etc. Aquí, en fin, vemos, saliendo del nuevo Templo, el río de la vida que todo lo vivificará, como el río que en la Jerusalén celestial sale del trono de Dios y del Cordero (Apocalipsis 22, 1 ss.).

La superabundancia de las aguas que salen del Templo amenazan anegar al Profeta, mostrando que aquellas bendiciones (versículo 1 y nota) superarán a cuanto el más ambicioso pudiera imaginar. Así también el Eclesiástico (Eclesiástico 24, 32 ss. y 40 ss.) compara la divina Sabiduría de las Escrituras (que es el mismo Cristo), con un río desbordante, que llega a hacerse mar sin orillas. De ahí la aplicación que se hace de este pasaje a la predicación del Evangelio: “El río de la Palabra divina y vivificadora debe brotar del templo.”

Pero, de tal manera se ha perdido el amor a la verdad, que la idea de misterio ha llegado a confundirse con la de ficción, siendo que esta es sinónimo de mentira, y el misterio es sinónimo de verdad profunda, porque es una verdad oculta, pero más real, según enseña San Pablo (II Corintios 4, 18), que las efímeras cosas que se ven.”
8 1Entonces me dijo: Estas aguas que corren hacia la región oriental, bajan al Arabá y entran en el mar, en el Mar Salado, cuyas aguas quedarán saneadas.

Como observan los comentadores, es esto una derogación del antiguo orden, el cual, si bien mandaba a los israelitas tener la mayor caridad con el extranjero “amándole como a ellos mismos” (Levítico 19, 18 y 33 ss), les imponía algunas restricciones para incorporarlos a la comunidad (Deuteronomio 23, 7 s.), y no asignaba, como aquí, al prosélito, parte individual en las suertes de cada tribu. El mismo espíritu reina en la Iglesia que fundó Jesús (el Mesías a quien Israel iba a rechazar) muriendo “no por la Nación solamente, sino también para congregar en uno a todos los hijos de Dios dispersos” (Juan 11, 52), pues por medio de la santa Iglesia, Dios había también de “visitar a los gentiles y tomar de entre ellos un pueblo para su nombre” (véase Hechos 15, 14 ss.). En la Iglesia, “una” y “católica”, es decir, universal, la igualdad espiritual debe existir “sin acepción de personas” (Romanos 2, 11 s.; 10, 12), ni importa “la circuncisión, sino la nueva creatura” (Gálatas 6, 15), es decir, el haber nacido de nuevo en Cristo (Juan 3, 5 y nota). Por medio de la Iglesia y en ella, los gentiles, que éramos “extraños a la sociedad de Israel, extranjeros a las alianzas, sin esperanza en la promesa y sin Dios en el mundo” (Efesios 2, 12), hemos sido admitidos a la “familia de Dios” (Efesios 2, 19), y no solo participamos de las promesas de Israel, sino de mayores aún como miembros de su propio Cuerpo místico (Gálatas 3, 28; Colosenses 3, 11; Juan 17, 22 ss.; Efesios 1, 5; I Tesalonicenses 4, 16 s.; Apocalipsis 19, 6 ss., etc.).
