La muerte de Moisés, y su sepultura por el mismo Dios, es “uno de los misterios históricos que nos ha dejado el Antiguo Testamento, parecido a la desaparición de Enoc y al rapto de Elías en el carro de fuego” (Nácar-Colunga). Según San Judas hubo un altercado entre San Miguel y Satanás por el cuerpo de Moisés (Judas versículo 9). Algunos Padres opinan que Moisés no murió, y que por eso pudo asistir, juntamente con Elías, a la Transfiguración de Jesús (Mateo 17, 3). En tal caso su sepultación por mano de Dios significaría su traslado. El Eclesiástico dedica al gran profeta el capítulo 45, 1-6. Moisés es figura de Cristo, por cuanto fue mediador de la Antigua Alianza. Lo es también como profeta (Deuteronomio 18, 15; Hechos de los Apóstoles 3, 22 s.), como intercesor (Éxodo 17, 1 ss.; 32, 31 ss.; Hebreos 7, 25; I Juan 2, 1 s.), como caudillo (Deuteronomio 33, 5; Isaías 55, 4; Hebreos 2, 10), como libertador (Éxodo 3, 7 ss.; Hechos de los Apóstoles 7, 25), como Maestro (Deuteronomio 33, 4; Isaías 61, 1; Lucas 4, 18), y como Cristo fue también él rechazado por Israel (Éxodo 2, 11 ss.; Hechos de los Apóstoles 7, 25; 28, 28). La vara de Moisés representa la Cruz, instrumento de la Redención y signo de nuestra salvación, y los milagros que el caudillo del pueblo de Dios obró en el desierto, son figuras del Redentor (por ejemplo el agua pura de la roca, la serpiente de bronce). La Iglesia venera al gran profeta y celebra su fiesta el 4 de septiembre. El Santoral cristiano conmemora igualmente muchos otros santos Patriarcas y Profetas del Antiguo Testamento.
6 Y Él lo enterró en un valle en el país de Moab, frente a Bet-Fegor; y nadie hasta hoy ha sabido su sepulcro.
