Vocación y desobediencia de Jonás

Nínive, capital del imperio de los asirios, fue “la más esplendorosa de todas las del mundo antiguo”. Estaba situada en la orilla izquierda del Tigris y se componía de cuatro ciudades, por lo cual se llama aquí la ciudad grande, como también en 3, 2 s. y en 4, 11. Fue destruida por los babilonios entre los años 606-604, y se perdió el recuerdo de sus inmensas ruinas hasta que en 1842 los arqueólogos las descubrieron.
3 1Pero Jonás se levantó para huir de la presencia de Yahvé, tomando el camino de Tarsis. Descendió a Jope, donde encontró una nave que se dirigía a Tarsis; pagó el pasaje, y se embarcó en ella para ir con los demás a Tarsis, lejos de la presencia de Yahvé.

En vez de ir a Oriente, Jonás baja a Jope (Jafa), puerto palestinense en la costa del Mediterráneo, para escapar hacia el lado opuesto, a Tarsis, ciudad o región situada en el extremo Occidente, probablemente en España. Tal vez fuera el motivo de su huida el temor de que Nínive, si se salvaba, llegase a ser un terrible azote para Israel (cf. 4, 1 s.). Así lo fueron, en efecto, como vemos en el cuarto libro de los Reyes (véase los capítulos 18 y 19) y en Isaías (véase capítulo 10), etc., las tremendas persecuciones de los asirios, que a veces son también símbolo profético de las naciones gentiles enemigas de Israel. Cf. Isaías 5, 25 y nota. San Juan Crisóstomo presenta al profeta desobediente como figura de los pecadores, “que, parecidos a hombres ebrios, no atienden adónde van, ni adonde ponen el pie, sino que, siguiendo sus pasiones, se pierden por su propia locura e inobediencia”. Si Dios nos confía una misión tenemos que dejar las comodidades y sacrificar nuestro yo. No busquemos refugio en los buques de Tarsis que obedecen a nuestro antojo; pues las olas del mar sirven a Dios y son más fuertes que las tablas del mísero barco de nuestro “yo”.
4 Pero Yahvé hizo soplar sobre el mar un viento recio, y se desencadenó en el mar una gran tempestad, de suerte que la nave estaba en peligro de ser deshecha.

Jonás, entretanto, había descendido al fondo de la nave. Allí se había acostado y dormía profundamente.

Alguien ha comparado este sueño de Jonás con el de Jesús en Marc. 4, 38. Fuera de la coincidencia material de que ambos dormían en una embarcación durante una tormenta, nos parece que, en vez de similitud, hay oposición entre el caso del divino Salvador, cuya presencia y cuya palabra potente y bondadosa dominaron el mar y calmaron la tempestad, y el caso de Jonás culpable, que duerme displicentemente mientras los demás sufren por aquella borrasca que el Señor Dios mandaba contra él, y que, lejos de remediarla, como Jesús, tiene al contrario que abandonar el navío para que este no naufrague. Creemos que se ha de ser muy parco en tomar el nombre santísimo de Jesús para esas comparaciones que no contienen ni una enseñanza doctrinal, ni un homenaje a la gloria del Hombre Dios.
6 Se le acercó el capitán de la nave y le dijo: “¿Qué te pasa, dormilón? Levántate e invoca a tu Dios. Quizás Dios piense en nosotros para que no perezcamos.”

Jonás comprende que es contra él la indignación de Dios, y reacciona con rectitud, confesando su culpa. Bien sabía que el Altísimo lo veía en todas partes. “Aquel divino semblante del que quiere huir, aquella presencia que pretende evitar, es el rostro que Dios interiormente enseñaba a su profeta.” Cf. 10 Entonces aquellos hombres quedaron sumamente atemorizados; y le dijeron: “¿Qué es lo que has hecho?” Pues comprendían los hombres que huía de la presencia de Yahvé, ya que él mismo se lo había declarado.

Es de creer que Jonás obraría así por inspiración de Dios, como Judit y tantos otros justos del Antiguo y Nuevo Testamento” (Páramo). Es sin duda Dios quien mueve a Jonás a este acto de rectitud, del que había de pender su propia salvación, la de sus compañeros, y el cumplimiento de los planes divinos de misericordia sobre Nínive. Para mirar a Jonás también aquí como figura del Salvador, habría que distinguir entre el Cordero sin mancha, que fue Jesús, víctima de los pecados ajenos, y Jonás, justamente perseguido por la justicia divina, y cuya culpa era causa de ruina para aquellos inocentes. Habría que recordar también que, en el caso del Evangelio, la tempestad del mar se calma gracias a las palabras del Señor presente a bordo, en tanto que aquí con Jonás ocurre precisamente lo contrario.
