Jonás en Nínive

San Agustín dice que la Nínive pecadora fue (simbólicamente) destruida y edificada en su lugar la Nínive penitente.

Los ninivitas creyeron: Es decir, no solo se arrepintieron de sus maldades, sino que creyeron en Dios. Jesús dice que “Jonás fue una señal para los ninivitas” (Lucas 11, 30), lo cual muestra que estos conocieron el gran milagro del capítulo 2, que confirma la verdad del Dios en cuyo nombre hablaba el profeta (véase Lucas 11, 32). Esta conversión de Nínive, que pareciera haber sido un episodio momentáneo, es quizá el hecho histórico central del Libro de Jonás, pues la capital de Asiria fue la única ciudad pagana que admitió oficialmente la religión de Israel, sin lo cual no se concebiría su grande contrición pública ante el simple anuncio de un profeta que hablaba en nombre de una divinidad extranjera. Tan señalada fue la misericordia con que Dios buscó la conversión de Nínive, que su empeño por atraerla es lo que da origen a todos los sucesos del Libro de Jonás y a todas las pruebas que sufre el profeta. Después de dedicar así uno de sus libros a la conversión de Nínive, la Biblia dedica otro a su apostasía: la profecía de Nahúm, cuya interpretación se aclara y cuya trascendencia se destaca si lo estudiamos en conexión con el presente Libro. No es cosa extraña ese edicto del rey. Sabemos, por ejemplo, que el rey Asarhaddón de Nínive (681-669) dio una orden parecida. Tampoco era extraordinario incluir a los animales en la penitencia. Herodoto narra que los persas hacían participar en el luto a los animales domésticos. Se los cubría con paños fúnebres y no se les daba de comer. Los balidos y bramidos que daban pidiendo alimento, instigaban aún más a los hombres a la contrición. Por otra parte, conviene leer la profecía de Nahúm, que es posterior a Jonás y se dirige contra Nínive, para saber que la capital de los asirios, primicias de los gentiles convertidos al Dios de Israel, será entre ellos la más rebelde. 8 Cúbranse de saco hombres y bestias, y clamen con ahínco a Dios; y conviértase cada uno de su mal camino y de las injusticias de sus manos.

Lejos de ser esta una expresión de duda, lo es, al contrario, de esperanza. El pueblo culpable bien sabe que merece el castigo, pero se atreve a esperar en la inagotable misericordia de Dios, la cual se da precisamente con mayor abundancia cuanto más se confía en ella (Salmo 32, 22 y nota). Nada sería más erróneo que ver aquí palabras de duda (en Joel 2, 14 las usa el profeta mismo de parte de Dios), o pensar que esa duda pudiera favorecer el espíritu de contrición y oración, porque “nadie navega contra la corriente de la esperanza”. Y, en último análisis, San Pablo nos enseña que la causa del perdón “no es del que quiere ni del que corre, sino de Dios que tiene misericordia” (Romanos 9, 16), “para que no se gloríe ninguna carne” (I Corintios 1, 29) creyendo que ha ganado el perdón por sus propios méritos, y le robe así a Dios la gloria, que Él cifra en el reconocimiento de su gratuita misericordia. Por lo demás, ¿quién, sino Dios mismo, pone en nosotros ese buen espíritu? “Aun en estado de gracia, necesitamos de una inspiración especial del Espíritu Santo para cada obra sobrenaturalmente buena” (Scheeben). ¿Qué no será para salir del pecado? 10 1Y vio Dios lo que hicieron, cómo se volvieron de su mal camino y arrepintiéndose Dios del mal con que los había conminado, no lo llevó a cabo.

Jesús opone el ejemplo de los ninivitas a la impenitencia de los fariseos, cuando dice: “Los hombres de Nínive se levantarán, en el día del juicio, con esta raza y la condenarán, porque ellos se arrepintieron a la predicación de Jonás” (Mateo 12, 41). “El Señor nos propone este ejemplo de sincera conversión de los ninivitas para que, haciendo con ella un cotejo de la nuestra, veamos sí tiene alguna relación con la de este pueblo. Pide conversión de corazón y frutos dignos da penitencia: quiere que nos lleguemos a Él con grande fe, humildad y confianza; que lloremos, gimamos y clamemos haciéndole una santa violencia que le sea agradable y que nuestra penitencia no consista en apariencias y promesas vanas, sino en acciones contrarias a todo aquello que nos apartó de su amistad” (Scío).
