Teme a Dios: Cf. Salmos 33, 12 ss.; Proverbios 1, 7 y notas. Hay pocas palabras en la Biblia que sean tan difíciles de traducir como el sustantivo “temor” y el verbo “temer”. El equivalente hebreo tiene dos significados: temer y respetar o reverenciar, pero en distinta escala, según la condición de la persona a que el “temor” sea tributado. Si se trata de Dios, como aquí, corresponde en general al temor filial y habría de traducirse por “reverencia”. Tenemos una clásica interpretación del temor en Efesios 5, 33: la esposa “tema” a su marido. San Pablo no quiere decir que la esposa tenga miedo a su marido, sino que lo trate con el debido respeto, pues un matrimonio donde los cónyuges se miran mutuamente con miedo, no es matrimonio cristiano, cuyo modelo es la íntima unión de Cristo con la Iglesia. Santa Teresita, que vivía de la espiritualidad bíblica, sufría mucho a causa de la poca claridad de algunas traducciones. En sus “Consejos y Recuerdos” leemos: “Me contrista ver la diferencia de las versiones. Si yo hubiera sido sacerdote, habría aprendido el hebreo y el griego a fin de poder leer la palabra de Dios tal como Él se dignó hablarla en lengua humana.” Su enfermedad y la regla del Convento no le permitían el cumplimiento de sus deseos; sabemos, empero, que Santa Paula estudió el hebreo para leer el Antiguo Testamento en la lengua original.
