El pueblo pide un rey
1 Cuando Samuel llegó a la edad avanzada, instituyó a sus hijos por jueces de Israel.

Se repite el caso de los hijos de Helí, pero esta vez no consta que Samuel fuese culpable de ninguna debilidad. Esto muestra que la salvación no es un fenómeno colectivo, sino individual. El pertenecer a la Iglesia nos hace ciertamente partícipes de innumerables gracias, pero como nadie puede entrar al Reino, si no nace de lo alto, según enseñó Jesús a Nicodemo (Juan 3, 3), así tampoco nadie puede alcanzar la vida eterna si no coopera personalmente.
4 Se reunieron, pues, todos los ancianos de Israel, y se llegaron a Samuel, en Ramá.

Aunque el establecimiento de la realeza estaba profetizado por Moisés (véase los derechos del rey en Deuteronomio 17, 14-20), ello no obstante el pedido desagradó a Samuel y a Dios mismo (versículo 7), ya que los israelitas exigen un rey tal como lo tienen los pueblos vecinos, y no un soberano tal como correspondía a la posición especial que Israel tenía entre las naciones según los designios de Dios.
6 Desagradó a Samuel esta propuesta que le expresaron: “Danos un rey que nos juzgue.” E hizo Samuel oración a Yahvé.

Episodio memorable. Es una prueba muy clara de la cólera de Dios cuando concede a los hombres lo que pretenden contra los designios de su amorosa Providencia. “Los planes de Dios parecen destruidos. La realeza del Eterno es instituida por una realeza humana que regirá a Israel en adelante. El hombre va a dirigir sus miradas hacia el hombre, en lugar de elevarlas, cargadas de esperanza, hacia un rey divino”. De aquí resultaron innumerables calamidades, si bien el Señor, como siempre lo hace, supo sacar bien de tantos males y preparar para su Mesías la familia del rey David. Ese rechazo de que Dios aquí se queja, fue repetido ante Pilato (Juan 19, 15) y seguirá repitiéndose hasta el final, como el mismo Jesús lo anuncia en Lucas 19, 14. Lo rechazan todos aquellos que adoran el ídolo del “yo”, o del dinero.

10 1Samuel refirió al pueblo que le había pedido un rey, todas las palabras de Yahvé,

Dios no se impuso (versículo 7-9); les dejó libertad de elegir, pero mandó a Samuel darles a conocer cómo los tratará el rey. “Lo que aquí propone Samuel no es precisamente la ley constitucional de la monarquía, sino la realidad práctica, mucho más gravosa para el pueblo que la teocracia que hasta ahora los había regido” (Nácar-Colunga).
11 y dijo: “Este será el derecho, del rey que va a reinar sobre vosotros: Tomará a vuestros hijos, y los empleará para sus carros, y como jinetes suyos para que corran delante de su carroza.

(Romanos 3, 4). Tal vez la más dolorosa palabra de Jesús es aquella: “Vosotros no queréis venir a mí para tener la vida” (Juan 5, 40).
