I. אַחֵר adjective another (properly one coming behind), feminine אַחֶ֫רֶת (with daghesh forte implicit); plural אֲחֵרִים (as if from singular אָחֵר), once Job 31:10 אֲחֵרִין, אֲחֵרוֺת (= Arabic , Sabean אאחֿר, Assyrian a—ru future feminine plural as substantive a—rat ûmê future of days) Gen 4:25 זֶרַע אַחֵר another seed Gen 8:10 שִׁבְעַת יָמִים אֲחֵרִים seven other days Exod 22:4 בִּשְׂדֵה אַחֵר in the field of another + often; אִישׁ אַחֵר another man (husband) Gen 29:19; Deut 24:2; Jer 3:1 חָצֵר הָאַחֶרֶת 1Kgs 7:8 the other court, see חָצֵר; ׳הַחוֺמָה א 2Chr 32:5 the other wall, see חוֺמָה. Appended to a proper name for distinction Ezra 2:31= Neh 7:34 (see vNeh 7:7 = Nehemiah vNeh 7:12) Neh 7:33 (probably here text error, see Be Ry¹⁸: not in Ezra 2:29). Often with the collateral sense of different, as ׳בְּגָדִים א other garments Lev 6:4; 1Sam 28:8; Ezek 42:14; Ezek 44:19 עָפָר, אֲבָנִים Lev 14:42 רוּחַ Num 14:24 ׳וְנֶהְפַּכְתָּ֫ לְאִישׁ אַ 1Sam 10:6 לֵב v1Sam 10:9; Ezek 11:19 (ᵐ5 Hi Sm); שֵׁם Isa 65:15 (compare Isa 62:2 חָדָשׁ); with that of strange, alien, as ׳אִישׁ אַ Deut 20:5; Deut 20:6; Deut 20:7; Deut 28:30 ( so אַחֵר, אֲחֵרִים alone Ps 109:8; Job 31:8; Job 31:10; Isa 65:22; Jer 6:12; Jer 8:10 and elsewhere); עַם Deut 28:32 אֶרֶץ Deut 29:27; Jer 22:26 אִשָּׁה Judg 11:2 לָשׁוֺן Isa 28:11 (|| בְּלַעֲגֵי שָׂפָה); especially in the phrase אֱלהִים אֲחֵרִים other gods (63 t.) So אַחֵר alone Isa 42:8; Ps 16:4. Of time, following, next (rare) ׳בַּשָּׁנָה הָאַ Gen 17:21 (P) in the next year; 2Kgs 6:29 ׳בַּיּוֺם הָאַ; ׳דּוֺר אַ Joel 1:3; Ps 109:13 in poetry the next generation (Judg 2:10 in prose = another generation).
