Las codornices y el maná
1 1Habiendo partido de Elim llegó todo el pueblo de los hijos de Israel al desierto de Sin, que está entre Elim y el Sinaí, el día quince del segundo mes después de su salida del país de Egipto.

2 Y murmuró todo el pueblo de los hijos de Israel contra Moisés y Aarón en el desierto.

Diles: Entre las dos tardes comeréis carne y por la mañana os hartaréis de pan; y conoceréis que Yo soy Yahvé, vuestro Dios.”

La Vulgata pone la palabra hebrea “manhú” y lo explica agregando: Esto quiere decir ¿Qué es esto? De “manhú” se formó la palabra de maná (v. 31). Hasta ahora han fracasado todos los intentos de explicar el maná como fenómeno natural. Según el contexto se trata de un manjar milagroso. Esto es tan evidente, que lo reconocían aun los fariseos que hablaban con Jesús (Juan 6, 31). El tamarisco que algunos consideran como producente del maná, exuda, es verdad, una especie de resina o goma de color amarillento y blanco, mas no hubiera bastado para alimentar todo un pueblo durante tan largo tiempo.

Su institución ha de verse en el relato de la Creación (Génesis 2, 2) donde el autor sagrado revela que Dios bendijo el séptimo día y lo “santificó”, es decir, lo reservó para Él. De ahí que el pueblo de Israel descansara después de sus seis días de trabajo en memoria del séptimo día, en que Dios “descansó” después de la Creación.
