C), en la parte meridional de la península del mismo nombre. La cumbre más alta, el famoso monte de Santa Catalina mide 2.600 metros. Las otras son el monte Safsafeh (1.994 m.), el Dschebel Musa (2.244 m.) y el Dschebel Serbal. Todos estos se disputan el honor de haber sido el escenario de la promulgación del Decálogo. La tradición judía y algunos modernos (Nielsen, Musil, Lucas) buscan el monte Sinaí u Horeb más al norte, en el país de Madián, o en Seír y Farán. Cf. 2 Habiendo partido de Rafidim, llegaron al desierto de Sinaí y acamparon en el desierto. Allí acampó Israel frente a la montaña.

He aquí una nueva etapa en la formación del Reino de Dios. Por libre beneplácito elige el Omnipotente al pueblo de Israel, lo declara “propiedad particular suya” y lo constituye como “reino de sacerdotes” y “nación santa”. Es, pues, el sentido del pacto del Sinaí, separar a Israel de todos los demás pueblos, hacerlo pueblo santo, antorcha de fe entre las naciones, darle carácter sacerdotal y concederle existencia nacional solamente en sentido limitado, es decir, en cuanto ellos reconozcan a Él como Rey; a Él solo, pues es un Dios celoso. San Pedro aplica la idea del sacerdocio y de la realeza a los cristianos, los que, mediante el bautismo son sacerdotes y reyes, por ser injertados en Jesucristo (I Pedro 2, 9). Igual expresión se usa en Apocalipsis 5, 10.
6 y seréis para Mí un reino de sacerdotes y una nación santa. Estas son las palabras que has de decir a los hijos de Israel.”

Todo el que tocare el monte morirá irremisiblemente.
