Oseas, último rey de Israel
1 El año doce de Acaz, rey dé Judá, Oseas, hijo de Elá, comenzó a reinar sobre Israel, en Samaria. (Reinó) nueve años,

4 1Mas el rey de Asiria descubrió una conspiración de Oseas que había enviado embajadores a Sua, rey de Egipto, y no pagó más el tributo al rey de Asiria, como solía hacer anualmente. Por lo cual el rey de Asiria lo tomó preso y lo encarceló.

Los críticos racionalistas sostienen que la caída de Samaria no debe considerarse como un castigo, sino como consecuencia del contacto con los poderosos reinos vecinos. Acusan al autor sagrado de haber escrito con prejuicio, prefiriendo el reino de Judá al de Israel. “Esta apreciación de los racionalistas no tiene en cuenta los hechos históricos y desconoce el carácter de la historiografía sagrada, la cual, haciendo caso omiso del desarrollo de la historia profana, investiga en la del pueblo escogido las leyes divinas que rigen el mundo” (Schuster-Holzammer). Importa mucho hacerse una idea clara de la caída de Samaria. Las diez tribus del reino de Israel caen en el cautiverio de Asiria, para nunca más volver a su tierra (Versículo 23), permaneciendo hasta hoy en la dispersión (diáspora), a diferencia de la tribu de Judá, que fue llevada cautiva a Babilonia (capítulos 24 y 25) para volver al cabo de 70 años y reconstruir a Jerusalén, según se narra en los dos libros de Esdras y Nehemías. Estos datos históricos sirven para comprender las profecías, v. gr. el capítulo 3 de Jeremías, donde Dios distingue las dos familias de Judá e Israel y finalmente anuncia el regreso de ambas unidas. La fecha de la caída de Samaria y del reino de Israel es el año 722 a. C. Habor es un afluente del Éufrates; Halah y Gozan es la zona atravesada por el río Habor. Los medos vivían en la parte norte de la Persia.
Causa de la ruina de Israel
7 Esto sucedió porque los hijos de Israel habían pecado contra Yahvé, su Dios, que los había sacado de la tierra de Egipto, de bajo de la mano del Faraón, rey de Egipto, y porque habían servido a otros dioses,

Como se ve, se hizo en Samaria una mezcla de cultos; por un lado se adoraba al Señor; por el otro fueron introducidos ídolos y cultos paganos de toda clase, de manera que el Dios de Israel era considerado como uno de los muchos dioses, cuyo culto se practicaba en el país, aunque perdieron poco a poco su influencia los dioses ajenos, llegando a predominar una especie de culto de Yahvé. Los samaritanos erigieron en el monte Garizim, por mano de Sanbalat, gran enemigo de los judíos, un templo semejante al de Jerusalén, donde instituyeron el culto de Yahvé. En tiempos de Cristo ya no eran del todo paganos, sino más bien cismáticos (Juan 4). Sin embargo, su origen medio pagano, que aquí vemos, explica la prevención que sobre ellos tenían los judíos.
