Elías arrebatado al cielo
1 Cuando Yahvé quiso arrebatar a Elías al cielo, mediante un torbellino, partió Elías con Eliseo desde Gálgala;

Los hijos de los profetas: Cf. III Reyes 20, 35 y nota. “Eran verdaderas congregaciones, organizadas perfectamente, establecidas por lo común cerca de los lugares de veneración religiosa especial, y a cuyos miembros se les daba el nombre de «hijos de los profetas»; «hijos en el sentido semítico de socio de una corporación»” (Ricciotti, Historia de Israel, número 422). Sin embargo, el espíritu sopla donde quiere (Juan 3, 8). De ahí que los grandes profetas no recibieran su formación en las “escuelas de los profetas”, sino que fueran llamados al cargo de profetas directamente por Dios.
4 Luego dijo Elías: “Eliseo, quédate, te ruego, aquí, porque Yahvé me envía a Jericó.” Mas él le respondió: “Por la vida de Yahvé, y por la vida de tu alma, que no te dejaré.” Y llegaron a Jericó.

Doble porción de tu espíritu: Los profetas son “hombres del Espíritu”. El Espíritu de Dios viene de ellos de tal manera que no es más el profeta el que habla sino el Espíritu del Señor. Eliseo pide doble porción de espíritu porque se siente en sentido espiritual primogénito de Elías, y los primogénitos tenían doble porción de herencia (Deuteronomio 21, 17). Santo Tomás entiende por duplicado espíritu el don de profecía y el don de milagros, de los cuales Eliseo obró mayor número que su maestro. Véase Eclesiástico 48, 13-15.
10 Respondió él: “Cosa difícil es la que pides. Si me vieres cuando fuere quitado de ti, te será hecho así; mas si no, no te será concedido.”

El carro de fuego significa el alma fogosa del gran profeta, el mayor después de Moisés, y, por decirlo así, el segundo Moisés. Elías volverá para predicar penitencia y preparar los corazones para la segunda venida de Cristo (véase Malaquías 4, 5; Apocalipsis 11, 3). Ya apareció por segunda vez en cierto sentido, en el precursor de la primera venida de Cristo, San Juan Bautista (Mateo 11, 13 s.; 17, 11 s.). De ahí que Jesús aplique a este misterio la fórmula. “Quien tiene oídos oiga” (Mateo 11, 15). Según un principio hermenéutico de San Jerónimo se esconde en tales casos bajo el velo de la letra un sentido oculto que se nos invita a escudriñar (cf. Mateo 13, 9 y 43; 24, 15; Marcos 4, 9 y 23; 7, 16; 13, 14; Lucas 8, 8). “Es decir, se insinúan en el caso dos sentidos, el uno literal, y el otro místico o espiritual de buena ley, en sus especies de típico, simbólico, parabólico y demás. Y según esto en la expresión «él es Elías» (Mateo 11, 14), bajo la letra que alude al gran profeta, tenemos indicado al gran Bautista, que es un Elías en espíritu. Es solución que, como sabemos, dio ya San Gregorio (Homilía 7 in Ev.), y no hay por qué enmendarle la plana en este punto” (Ramos García, Estudios Bíblicos, 1949, pág. 114). Elías es bajo muchos aspectos, figura de Cristo: se retira al desierto, ayuna cuarenta días, come el pan maravilloso de los Ángeles, símbolo de la Sagrada Eucaristía, y es llevado milagrosamente a los cielos. La fuente donde el profeta hizo el milagro, se llama hoy “Fuente del Sultán” (Ain es-Sultán). Nace al pie de la Jericó antigua y provee de agua potable a toda la ciudad.

De todos modos es esta una fuerte lección para los niños —o adultos— burlones, que so pretexto de diversión o buen humor suelen faltar a la caridad y aun al respeto debido a la Majestad divina. Cf.
