En el siglo XIV antes de Cristo No fue escenario de la reforma religiosa de Amenofis IV, el cual destronó al dios Amón e introdujo un monoteísmo que culminaba en la figura del dios Aton. “El odio contra aquel dios le llevó a cambiar su primer nombre de Amenofis, que recordaba el nombre execrado (Amón está satisfecho), por el de Ikhnaton, que encerraba el nombre del dios dilecto (Aton está satisfecho); poco después, y por la misma razón, abandonó la capital, Tebas, trasladándose a la nueva ciudad fundada por él mismo y denominada Akhetaton (Horizonte de Aton), en lo que es hoy Tell el-Amarna, a unos 300 kilómetros al sur del Cairo” (Ricciotti, Historia de Israel, número 34). Bajo el reinado de Tutankhamón, sucesor de Amenofis, los sacerdotes de Amón lograron restablecer el culto de su dios y eliminar los efectos de la reforma monoteísta de Amenofis.
