5 1¿De qué sirve daros golpes, si seguís rebelándoos? La cabeza toda está enferma, y todo el corazón doliente.

Otra traducción: ¿en qué parte se puede daros golpes? Es como si dijera: Todo vuestro cuerpo es una sola llaga, ya no hay lugar sano para nuevos golpes y castigos. Los castigos a que se refiere el profeta son las invasiones de los pueblos enemigos (véase IV Reyes 16, 5; II Paralipómenos 28, 5 ss.). La cabeza significa a los príncipes, el corazón a los sacerdotes.
6 Desde la planta del pie hasta la cabeza, no queda en él nada sano; hay solo heridas, contusiones y llagas inflamadas, que no han sido cerradas, ni vendadas, ni suavizadas con aceite.

Contra el culto rutinario y exterior se pronuncia la Sagrada Escritura muchas veces, p. ej. El profeta quiere decir: de nada sirven los sacrificios sin la recta intención y sin la contrición del corazón. San Agustín y San Jerónimo observan que los sacrificios de animales tenían valor en cuanto figuraban los sacrificios espirituales y verdaderos, y apartaban al pueblo de la idolatría. Cf. 58, 1 ss.; 66, 2. En 63, 10 el profeta introduce a Dios diciendo que el pueblo, con su pecado, ha entristecido al Espíritu de su Dios que le había rescatado y llevado a puerto de salvación. Santa Teresita aplica este pensamiento a los que vivimos bajo la Ley de Cristo, quien también condena las prácticas puramente exteriores. “He aquí, dice la Santa de Lisieux, lo que Jesús exige de nuestra parte. No tiene necesidad de nuestras obras; únicamente aprecia nuestro amor… Sí, hoy más que nunca, Jesús está ansioso. No encuentra sino ingratos e indiferentes entre los cristianos del mundo y entre sus discípulos. ¡Ay! existen tan pocos corazones que se entreguen sin reserva alguna a la ternura de su infinito amor” (Historia de un alma, capítulo XI). Jesús es llamado el Justo, y no practicó la justicia en el sentido pagano de “dar a cada uno lo suyo”, sino que Él pagó “lo que no había robado” (Salmos 68, 5), y en el Sermón de la Montaña estableció la Ley de la caridad que hemos de practicar a imitación de Él mismo, perdonando al prójimo cuantas veces nos ofendiere.
