Bover-Cantera vierte: Ya no habrá allí mamoncillo de pocos días, ni anciano que no haya cumplido su vida; antes bien, el joven morirá centenario, y el pecador será de cien años alcanzado por la maldición. “La idea de esta profecía es la del retorno a la inocencia patriarcal, o más bien a la inocencia primitiva mucho más perfecta” (Le Hir). Fillion la llama “la edad de oro mesiánica” y hace notar que “la longevidad patriarcal reaparecerá”. Jünemann dice: “Será la longevidad y dicha del paraíso.” Véase Salmos 89, 10 y nota; Zacarías 8, 4. Suele interpretarse este texto también en el sentido de llegar a viejo sin lograr la madurez del juicio y de la virtud. Pero, como observa el Cardenal Gomá, “el texto dice lo contrario; se trata de los tiempos felices del Mesías: en que tendrán los justos una longevidad feliz” (Biblia y predicación p. 273). Él profeta habla solamente de la longevidad; el último enemigo, la muerte (I Corintios 15, 26) será destruido después de la última rebelión de Satanás al fin de los tiempos (Apocalipsis 20, 14).
