  1. 1. Retoño y renuevo (en hebreo nézer) designan al Mesías. Compárese las expresiones análogas en 4, 2; 53, 2; Jeremías 23, 5; 33, 15; Zacarías 3, 8; 6, 12. A este pasaje se refiere San Mateo cuando dice que Jesús será llamado Nazareno (Mateo 2, 23). San Jerónimo ve en el retoño a la Madre del Señor, “sencilla, pura, sincera, sin ningún otro germen extraño, y a semejanza de Dios, fecunda en su unidad” (A Eustoquia). El renuevo (San Jerónimo vierte: flor) es Cristo. La explicación del Doctor Máximo, que distingue entre retoño y renuevo, no encuentra simpatía entre los exégetas modernos, porque no concuerda con el paralelismo de los miembros del verso. Retoño y renuevo brotan del mismo tronco (Simón-Prado) y se refieren ambos a Jesucristo. El tronco de Isaí (Vulgata: Jesé) es la casa de David, hijo de Isaí. Cf.
