Importa mucho reflexionar sobre esta exclamación del pueblo y la divina respuesta que es terminantemente negativa. No se piense que las maceraciones corporales tienen valor en sí mismas, como si Dios se gozase en vernos sufrir (véase Colosenses 2, 16-23 y notas). Lo que Él quiere son “sacrificios de justicia” (véase Salmos 4, 6 y nota), es decir la rectitud de corazón para obedecerle según Él quiere y no según nuestro propio concepto de santidad, que muchas veces es producto de nuestra soberbia. De ningún provecho son los ayunos y otras buenas obras si les falta la recta intención, si su raíz es la hipocresía, y si son acompañados de dureza contra los pobres y deudores (Ezequiel 1, 7 y 16). “De nada sirve quitar al cuerpo su nutrición, si el alma no se aparta de la iniquidad, y si la lengua no deja de hablar mal” (San León Magno), ¡Cuántos se precian de cumplir los preceptos y aún más, pero el motivo de su actividad no es otro que el amor propio! “En verdad ya recibieron su recompensa”, dice el Señor (Mateo 6, 2). Quisiste cuidar a un enfermo y has curado la herida de tu corazón. Quisiste consolar a afligidos y has consolado tu propia alma. Quisiste atenuar un dolor ajeno y has moderado la agudeza del tuyo.
