La figura de Sansón difiere de la de otros Jueces en varios aspectos. “No es el héroe que acaudilla al pueblo y le lleva a la victoria. Es él solo que realiza sus hazañas contra los filisteos, que oprimían a los israelitas del mediodía. Su fuerza extraordinaria estaba ligada a su consagración como nazareo, cuyo signo principal es el no tocar la navaja a la cabeza del consagrado, y la conservación, por tanto, de su cabellera. Cuando perdió esta, perdió su fuerza. Y la causa de la pérdida fue el amor de las mujeres” (Nácar- Colunga).
2 Cuando subió (a su casa) habló a su padre y a su madre, diciendo: “He visto en Timná a una mujer de las hijas de los filisteos; ahora pues, tomádmela por mujer.”

Los matrimonios con los filisteos, aunque no estaban prohibidos explícitamente, no concordaban con el espíritu de la Ley (Éxodo 34, 16; Deuteronomio 7, 1 y 4), pues constituían un peligro para la religión de Israel. Pero, como se ve, en los tiempos de los Jueces muchos no conocían la Ley ni su espíritu. Por lo demás, “esto venía de Yahvé”, como dice el texto, es decir, “el Señor se aprovechaba de aquel capricho de Sansón y le daba ocasión para empezar la obra a que le tenía destinado” (Nácar-Colunga).
Sansón mata a un león
5 Bajó Sansón con su padre y su madre a Timná, y cuando llegaron a las viñas de Timná, he aquí que un leoncillo salió rugiendo a su encuentro.

10 Luego bajó su padre a casa de la mujer, y Sansón hizo allí un banquete; porque tal era la costumbre de los mozos.
