2. in a wider sense the name embraces all nations not Jews that made the language, customs, and learning of the Greeks their own; so that where Ἕλληνες are opposed to Jews, the primary reference is to a difference of religion and worship: Joh 7:35 (cf. American edition, p. 967); Act 16:1; Act 16:3; (Act 21:28); 1Co 1:22-23 Rec.; Gal 2:3 (Josephus, Antiquities 20, 11, 2); Ἰουδαῖοι τέ καί Ἕλληνες, and the like: Act 14:1; Act 18:4; Act 19:10; Act 19:17; Act 20:21; Rom 1:16; Rom 2:9-10; Rom 3:9; Rom 10:12; 1Co 1:24; 1Co 10:32; 1Co 12:13; Gal 3:28; Col 3:11. The word is used in the same wide sense by the Greek church Fathers, cf. Otto on Tatian, p. 2; (Sophocles' Lexicon, under the word). The Ἕλληνες spoken of in Joh 12:20 and Act 17:4 are Jewish proselytes from the Gentiles; see προσήλυτος, 2. (Cf. B. D. under the word etc. (especially American edition).)
