ἐναντίος, ἐναντία, ἐναντίον (ἀντίος set against) (from Homer down), properly, that which is over against; opposite; used:
1. primarily of place; opposite, contrary: of the wind (Xenophon, an. 4, 5, 3), Mat 14:24; Mar 6:48; Act 27:4; ἐξ ἐναντίας (Winers Grammar, 591 (550); Buttmann, 82 (71)), opposite, over against (see ἐκ, I. 4), with the genitive Mar 15:39.
2. metaphorically, opposed as an adrersary, hostile, antagonistic in feeling or act: 1Th 2:15 (on which passage (for confirmatory references to ancient authors) cf.
