Muerte de María
1 1El primer mes llegó toda la Congregación de los hijos de Israel al desierto de Sin, y él pueblo estableció su morada en Cades. Allí murió María y allí fue sepultada.

Dos veces, porque le faltaba la plena fe en la bondad de Dios (c. 12). Pensaba que Dios en vista de las reiteradas murmuraciones del pueblo (cf. 27, 14; Deuteronomio 3, 24 ss.; 32, 51) le negaría el agua, lo cual habría significado la muerte de todos y la anulación de la promesa divina de introducirlos en la tierra de promisión. De este modo Dios pasaría por mentiroso, y sus promesas no tendrían más valor que las de los hombres que prometen y no cumplen (cf. Romanos 11, 29). Por eso la duda de Moisés y Aarón no se dirigía contra la bondad de Dios, sino más bien contra su santidad y fidelidad. Esto quiere decir el término: “No me habéis santificado” (v. 12), y solo este concepto explica el grave castigo que Dios pronunció contra ambos. Ni Moisés, figura de la Ley, ni Aarón sacerdote de la Antigua Alianza, pudieron entrar ni introducir al pueblo en la tierra prometida. Esto estaba reservado a Josué (que quiere decir Jesús) para mostrar que solo Cristo sería el Redentor capaz de llevarnos al cielo (San Jerónimo). San Pablo nos explica el misterio de la peña: “La piedra era Cristo” (I Corintios 10, 4). De sus labios brotaron las aguas de la vida (Juan 7, 37 ss.; Ef. 5, 26), las palabras del Evangelio, “que es fuerza de Dios para salvación de todos los que creen” (Romanos 1, 16). Muchas veces encontramos en la Biblia la piedra como figura de Cristo. Cf. Génesis 28, 11 s.; Éxodo 17, 12: Josué 4, 20, etc. Él es también la piedra angular: Cf. Salmo 117, 22; Mateo 21, 42; Hechos 4, 11; Romanos 9, 33; I Pedro 2, 7.
12 Mas Yahvé dijo a Moisés y a Aarón: “Por cuanto no habéis tenido fe en Mí y no me habéis santificado ante los hijos de Israel, no introduciréis este pueblo en la tierra que Yo les he dado.”
