ὡσεί — hōseí

ὡσεί (ὡς and εἰ (Tdf. Proleg., p. 110)), adverb, from Homer down, properly, as if, i. e.

a. as it were (had been), as though, as, like as, like: Mat 3:16; Mat 9:36 (Treg. ὡς); Luk 3:22 (L T Tr WH ὡς); Act 2:3; Act 6:15; Act 9:18 (L T Tr WH ὡς); Rom 6:13 L T Tr WH; Heb 1:12; also Rec. in Mar 1:10; Joh 1:32; γίνεσθαι ὡσεί, Mat 28:4 R G; Mar 9:26; Luk 22:44 (L brackets WH reject the passive); εἶναι ὡσεί, Mat 28:3 (L T Tr WH ὡς), and Rec. in Heb 11:12 and Rev 1:14; φαίνεσθαι ὡσεί τί, to appear like a thing, Luk 24:11.

b. about, nearly: α. before numerals: Mat 14:21; Luk 1:56 (R G);; Joh 6:10 (R G L (others ὡς)); Act 2:41; Act 4:4 (R G); (in L T Tr WH it is strengthened here by the addition of περί);; also, Rec. in Mar 6:44; R G in Joh 4:6; Joh 19:14 (G?), 39; Act 5:36; Lachmann in Joh 6:19 (Jdg 3:29; Neh 7:66; Xenophon, Hell. 1, 2, 9; 2, 4, 25). β. before a measure of space: ὡσεί λίθου βολήν, Luk 22:41.
