Ἡλίας — Hēlías

Ἠλιάς ((so Rst elz G; WH Ἠλείας cf. WHs Appendix, p. 155; Tdf. Proleg., p. 84 and see εἰ, ἰ, but) L Tr Ἡλιάς, Tdf. Ἡλείας (on the breathing in manuscripts see Tdf. Proleg., p. 107; WH. Introductory § 408; current edd, are not uniform)), ἡλίου (Buttmann, 17 (16), 8; but once (viz. Luk 1:17 T Tr marginal reading WH) Ἠλίᾳ), ὁ (אֵלִיָּה or אֵלִיָּהוּ i. e. either 'strength of Jehovah' or 'my God is Jehovah'), Elijah, a prophet born at Thisbe (but see B. D. under the word, also under the word ), the unflinching champion of the theocracy in the reigns of the idolatrous kings Ahab and Ahaziah. He was taken up to heaven without dying, whence the Jews expected he would return just before the advent of the Messiah, whom he would prepare the minds of the Israelites to receive (1Ki 17:1-24; 1Ki 18:1-46; 1Ki 19:1-21; 2Ki 2:6 ff; 2Ch 21:12; Mal 4:4; Sir 48:1; Sir 48:4; Sir 48:12 (cf.
