Hay muchas versiones diversas. Parece que Job atribuye a sus amigos (4, 6; 5, 1) burlas semejantes a las que recibió Jesús de sus enemigos a causa del abandono por parte del Padre (cf. San Próspero explica esta conducta de los malos hacia los buenos: Todos los que quieren vivir con piedad en Jesucristo, dice, deben disponerse a sufrir oprobios y burlas de parte de los impíos, a ser despreciados como insensatos que pierden los bienes presentes y no aspiran ni se aficionan más que a los futuros. Dios lo permite para aumentar el brillo de la corona de los buenos. Este desprecio, esta burla, redundará en perjuicio de los malos, cuando su abundancia se convierta en escasez y su ciego orgullo en confusión. (In Sent. et Epigram. c. 32).

Es el misterio de que tratan los Salmos 36, 48, 72, etc. Dios permite muchas veces que los logreros y ladrones prosperen, “porque tiene reservado su castigo para la otra vida… Dios suele premiar con bienes temporales algunas obras buenas que a veces hacen los malos, y castigar con aflicciones y penas de esta vida las culpas o defectos en que incurren los que le sirven” (Páramo).

Este cuadro de la grandeza de Dios no nos da más que una débil idea de Dios. Cuanto más nos aplicamos a conocerlo, más abismos de perfección descubrimos en Él. Por esto dice San Gregorio Nacianceno que cuanto más se trata de conocer a Dios, más se sustrae Él a las investigaciones, huyendo de tal manera en el mismo momento en que creemos alcanzarle, que levanta hasta los cielos a los que le buscan con amor (In Job). También la naturaleza hace las veces de una Biblia que nos da el conocimiento natural de Dios, así como las palabras con que Él se revela, nos dan el conocimiento sobrenatural de Él. Cf. Job ensalza la providencia del Creador, para demostrar que Él no puede hacer injusticia al hombre. El piadoso paciente vislumbra la solución del problema del dolor, más todavía no logra encontrarla.
12 1En los ancianos reside la sabiduría, y en la larga vida la prudencia;
