Chapter 5
1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves those born of Him.1

2 By this we know that we love the children of God: when we love God and keep His commandments.

And His commandments are not burdensome,
ἐστινestinisG1510V-PAI-3S θεοῦ,theouof God,G2316N-GSM-T ἐντολὰςentolascommandmentsG1785N-APF αὐτοῦautouof HimG0846P-GSM τηρῶμεν·tērōmenwe may keep;G5083GV-PAS-1P ἐντολαὶentolaicommandmentsG1785N-NPF αὐτοῦautouof HimG0846P-GSM βαρεῖαιbareiaiburdensomeG0926A-NPF εἰσίν.eisinare.G1510V-PAI-3P 4 because everyone born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith.

Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.

And it is the Spirit who testifies to this, because the Spirit is the truth.

τρεῖςtreisthreeG5140A-NPM εἰσινeisinthere areG1510V-PAI-3P μαρτυροῦντες,marturountesbearing testimony:G3140V-PAP-NPM οὐρανῷouranōheavenG3772N-DSM πατήρpatērFatherG3962N-NSM-T οὗτοιhoutoitheseG3778D-NPM τρεῖςtreisthreeG5140A-NPM εἰσινeisinareG1510V-PAI-3P - TR and GOC three that testify in heaven: The Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. 8And there are three that testify on earth:
8 the Spirit, the water, and the blood—and these three are in agreement.

9 Even if we accept human testimony, the testimony of God is greater. For this is the testimony that God has given about His Son.
μαρτυρίανmarturiantestimonyG3141N-ASF ἀνθρώπωνanthrōpōnof menG0444N-GPM λαμβάνομεν,lambanomenwe receive,G2983V-PAI-1P μαρτυρίαmarturiatestimonyG3141N-NSF θεοῦtheouof GodG2316N-GSM-T μείζωνmeizōngreaterG3173A-NSF-C ἐστίν,estinis,G1510V-PAI-3S ἐστὶνestinisG1510V-PAI-3S μαρτυρίαmarturiatestimonyG3141N-NSF θεοῦtheouof GodG2316N-GSM-T μεμαρτύρηκενmemarturēkenHe has testifiedG3140V-RAI-3S περὶpericoncerningG4012PREP αὐτοῦ.autouof Him.G0846P-GSM 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within him; whoever does not believe God has made Him out to be a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given about His Son.

ἔχωνechōnhavingG2192V-PAP-NSM ἔχειecheihasG2192V-PAI-3S ἔχωνechōnhavingG2192V-PAP-NSM θεοῦtheouof GodG2316N-GSM-T ἔχει.¶echeihas.G2192V-PAI-3S Effective Prayer
13 I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.1

14 And this is the confidence that we have before Him: If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
ἐστὶνestinisG1510V-PAI-3S παρρησίαparrēsiaconfidenceG3954N-NSF ἔχομενechomenwe haveG2192V-PAI-1P αὐτόν,autonHim,G0846P-ASM αἰτώμεθαaitōmethawe shall askG0154V-PMS-1P κατὰkataaccording toG2596PREP θέλημαthelēmawillG2307N-ASN αὐτοῦautouof HimG0846P-GSM ἀκούειakoueiHe hearsG0191V-PAI-3S 15 And if we know that He hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we already possess what we have asked of Him.
οἴδαμενoidamenwe knowG6063V-PAI-1P ἀκούειakoueiHe hearsG0191V-PAI-3S αἰτώμεθα,aitōmethawe shall ask,G0154V-PMS-1P οἴδαμενoidamenwe knowG6063V-PAI-1P ἔχομενechomenwe haveG2192V-PAI-1P αἰτήματαaitēmatarequestsG0155N-APN ᾐτήκαμενētēkamenwe have askedG0154V-RAI-1P αὐτοῦ.¶autouHim.G0846P-GSM 16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he should ask God, who will give life to those who commit this kind of sin. There is a sin that leads to death; I am not saying he should ask regarding that sin.
ἴδῃidēshall seeG1492HV-2AAS-3S ἀδελφὸνadelphonbrotherG0080N-ASM αὐτοῦautouof himG0846P-GSM ἁμαρτάνονταhamartanontasinningG0264V-PAP-ASM ἁμαρτίανhamartiana sinG0266N-ASF θάνατον,thanatondeath,G2288N-ASM αἰτήσειaitēseihe will askG0154V-FAI-3S δώσειdōseiHe will giveG1325V-FAI-3S τοῖςtoisto thoseG3588T-DPM ἁμαρτάνουσινhamartanousinsinningG0264V-PAP-DPM θάνατον.¶thanatondeath.G2288N-ASM ἜστινEstinThere isG1510V-PAI-3S ἁμαρτίαhamartiaa sinG0266N-NSF θάνατον·thanatondeath;G2288N-ASM περὶpericoncerningG4012PREP ἐκείνηςekeinēsthat [one]G1565D-GSF λέγωlegōdo I sayG3004GV-PAI-1S ἐρωτήσῃ.erōtēsēhe may implore.G2065V-AAS-3S 17 All unrighteousness is sin, yet there is sin that does not lead to death.

18 We know that anyone born of God does not keep on sinning; the One who was born of God protects him,1 and the evil one2 cannot touch him.

- Or evil; similarly in verse 19
19 We know that we are of God, and that the whole world is under the power of the evil one.
οἴδαμενoidamenWe knowG6063V-RAI-1P ἐσμενesmenwe areG1510V-PAI-1P κόσμοςkosmosworldG2889N-NSM πονηρῷponērōevil [one]G4190A-DSM κεῖται.keitailies.G2749V-PNI-3S 20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true—in His Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
