ὅταν — hótan

ὅταν, a particle of time, compound of ὅτε and ἄν, at the time that, whenever (German dannwann;wannirgend); used of things which one assumes will really occur, but the time of whose occurrence he does not definitely fix (in secular authors often also of things which one assumes can occur, but whether they really will or not he does not know; hence, like our in case that, as in Plato, Prot., p. 360 b.; Phaedr., p. 256 e.; Phaedo, p. 68 d.); (cf. Winers Grammar, § 42, 5; Buttmann, § 139, 33);

a. with the subjunctive present: Mat 6:2; Mat 6:5; Mat 10:23; Mar 13:11 (here Rec. aorist);; Luk 11:36; Luk 12:11; Luk 14:12; Luk 21:7; Joh 7:27; Joh 16:21; Act 23:35; 1Co 3:4; 2Co 13:9; 1Jn 5:2; Rev 10:7; Rev 18:9; preceded by a specification of time: ἕως τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης, ὅταν etc., Mat 26:29; Mar 14:25; followed by τότε, 1Th 5:3; 1Co 15:28; equivalent to as often as, of customary action, Mat 15:2; Joh 8:44; Rom 2:14; at the time when equivalent to as long as, Luk 11:34; Joh 9:5.

b. with the subjunctive aorist: equivalent to the Latinquandoacciderit,ut with subjunctive present, Mat 5:11; Mat 12:43; Mat 13:32; Mat 23:15; Mat 24:32; Mark 4:15f, 29 (R G), 31f; 13:28; Luk 6:22; Luk 6:26; Luk 8:13; Luk 11:24; Luk 12:54; Luk 21:30; Joh 2:10; Joh 10:4; Joh 16:21; 1Ti 5:11 (here L marginal reading future); Rev 9:5. equivalent toquando with future perfect, Mat 19:28; Mat 21:40; Mar 8:38; Mar 9:9; Mar 12:23 (G Tr WH omit; L brackets the clause), 25; Luk 9:26; Luk 16:4; Luk 16:9; Luk 17:10; Joh 4:25; Joh 7:31; Joh 13:19; Joh 14:29; Joh 15:26; Joh 16:4; Joh 16:13; Joh 16:21; Joh 21:18; Act 23:35; Act 24:22; Rom 11:27; 1Co 15:24 (here L T Tr WH present), (where the meaning is, 'when he shall have said that the ὑποταξις predicted in the Psalm is now accomplished'; cf. As in Byzantine authors equivalent to ὅτε, when, with the indicative aorist: ὅταν ἤνοιξεν, Rev 8:1 L T Tr WH; (add ὅταν ὀψέ ἐγένετο, Mar 11:19 T Tr text WH, cf. Buttmann, 223 (193); but others take this of customary action, whenever evening came (i. e. every evening, R. V.)). ὅταν, does not occur in the Epistles of Peter and Jude.
