Fillion inicia el comentario de este capítulo haciendo notar que “es en él donde hallamos indicada la suerte que espera al pueblo judío” y observa que la mención del Templo de Dios (v. 2) nos muestra al Templo de Jerusalén y la operación de medir recuerda la de Ezequiel (cf. Ez. 40, 3 ss.; 41, 13; 42, 16), siendo de notar que no puede tratarse del Templo histórico, pues este había sido destruido por los Romanos el año 70, es decir, casi treinta años antes que S. Juan escribiera el Apocalipsis. “El Templo de Dios , que hasta ahora era el templo celestial se aplica al templo de Jerusalén (v. 1); esta ciudad es llamada la Ciudad Santa (v. 2), expresión que designa a la Jerusalén celestial en 21, 2 y 10; 22, 19; asimismo se llama a Jerusalén la gran ciudad (v. 8), designación técnica de Roma (16, 19; 17, 18; 18, 10); en fin, los habitantes de la tierra (v. 10) son los Palestinos, en tanto que la expresión se aplica de ordinario al conjunto de los gentiles” (Pirot). Hoy se piensa más bien en Moisés y Elías (Simón- Prado), los dos testigos de la Transfiguración (Mc. 9, 1 ss. y notas) que representan “la Ley y los Profetas”; y es evidente la semejanza que por sus actos tienen con aquellos estos dos testigos (v. 5 s. y notas), siendo de notar que Moisés, según una leyenda judía que trae Josefo, habría sido arrebatado en una nube en el monte de Abar. Por otra parte, y sin perjuicio de lo anterior, Bossuet ve en los dos testigos la autoridad religiosa y la civil y en tal sentido es también evidente la relación que ellos tienen con “los dos olivos” de Zacarías, que son el príncipe Zorobabel y el sacerdote Jesús ben Josedec (véase Za. 4, 3 y 11 s.; Si. 49, 13 ss. y notas). Ello podría coincidir con los muchos vaticinios particulares sobre el “gran monarca” que lucharía contra el Anticristo de consuno con la autoridad espiritual, ya que también las dos Bestias del Apocalipsis presentan ambos aspectos: el político en la Bestia del mar (13, 1 ss.) y el religioso en el falso profeta que se pondrá a su servicio (13, 11 ss.).

Algunos han pensado sin embargo que Moisés y Elías son más bien las dos alas referidas en 12, 14. Con respecto al primero, dice un autor que la cifra de tres años y medio (los 42 meses del v. 2) “ha tomado la significación alegórica de tiempo de crisis, sentido de tal modo tradicional que St. 5, 17 y Lc. 4, 25 se sirvieron de él para señalar la duración de una sequía que en realidad no duró sino tres años”. Notemos que el texto que narra el fin de aquella sequía en 1 R. 18, 1 se armoniza muy bien con los citados, si se entiende, según la versión más exacta, que Dios ordenó la lluvia “pasados ya muchos días del año tercero” o sea cuando estaban muy excedidos los tres años. Así lo entendieron sin duda tanto Jesús como el Apóstol Santiago al hablar de este episodio en os citados pasajes.

Pirot señala como característica del estilo apocalíptico la falta de esperanza en el “siglo presente” para refugiarse en el “siglo futuro”. Podría extenderse esta característica a todos los escritos del Nuevo Testamento, siendo evidente que tener esperanza significa no estar conforme con lo presente (cf. Ga. 1, 4 y nota), pues quien está satisfecho con lo actual se arraiga aquí abajo (cf. Jr. 35, 10) y no desea que venga Cristo (22, 20). Lo que se teme no se espera, dice S. Pablo (Rm. 8, 24), y de ahí que a los mundanos parezca pesimista el Evangelio no obstante sus maravillosas promesas eternas, como aquellos “que no pueden perdonarle a Cristo que haya anunciado la cizaña hasta el fin (Mt. 13, 30 y 39 ss.) en vez de traer un mensaje de perfección definitiva en esta vida” (cf. Lc. 18, 8). He aquí una piedra de toque para que probemos la realidad de nuestra propia fe (cf. 1 Pe. 1, 7), sin lo cual ella puede degenerar en una simple costumbre, tal vez con apariencia de piedad (2 Tm. 3, 5), pero sin carácter sobrenatural, según lo que reprochó Jesús a Pedro y a los discípulos aun después de su Resurrección (Mt. 16, 23; Lc. 24, 25). La esperanza del Mesías, dice el Conc. Trid., no es menos para nosotros que para el antiguo Israel. Si ahora tuviésemos la plenitud, no viviríamos de esa esperanza. Pasajes como este, llenos de espíritu de alegría, de esperanza y amor, abundan en el Apocalipsis y nos muestran una vez más (cf. introducción a Isaías) que los libros proféticos no son fríos anuncios de sucesos futuros —lo que ya bastaría para darles extraordinario interés—, sino también precioso alimento de nuestra vida espiritual.
