El sacerdocio de Melquisedec y el de Leví
1 Este Melquisedec, rey de Salem, sacerdote del Dios Altísimo, es el que salió al encuentro de Abrahán, cuanto este volvía de la derrota de los reyes, y le bendijo1.

Sigue la comparación con Melquisedec, rey de Salem (Jerusalén), que es en el Antiguo Testamento tipo de Cristo Sacerdote y Rey (Sal. 109, 3 y 4; Is. 11; Za. 6, 11 ss., etc.). Como aquel, así también Cristo es “rey de paz” y “sin padre”, es decir, sacerdote por vocación de Dios y no por herencia de familia levítica; y así como Melquisedec descuella sobre Abrahán y Leví, así también la Persona de Cristo tiene preeminencia sobre la persona de aquel. Para hacernos comprender su argumentación, el Apóstol aduce los diezmos que Abrahán dio a Melquisedec, mostrando así la superioridad de este. Cf. Gn. 14, 18 y nota.

Ni fin de vida: No parece esto afirmar que Melquisedec continúe viviendo (como lo sabemos de Elías y Enoc), sino que su muerte permanece tan ignorada como todas las demás circunstancias de su vida que enumera S. Pablo sobre este misterioso personaje. Algunos lo creían de naturaleza angélica y querían así explicar que “el orden de Melquisedec” se aplicase al sacerdocio de Jesús (5, 6). De todos modos recalca S. Pablo el carácter celestial del divino Pontífice, que fue “nombrado por Dios” (5, 10), que penetró los cielos (4, 14) y dijo a los sacerdotes de Israel: “Vosotros sois de abajo; Yo soy de arriba” (Jn. 8, 23).

11 Si, pues, la perfección se hubiera dado por medio del sacerdocio levítico, ya que bajo él recibió el pueblo la Ley ¿qué necesidad aún de que se levantase otro sacerdote según el orden de Melquisedec y que no se denominase según el orden de Aarón?1

Una esperanza mejor: la Nueva Alianza de los creyentes en Cristo, la Ley de la gracia y las promesas que superan a las esperanzas puramente terrenales de Israel. Otros traducen en el sentido de que la perfección no vino de la Ley, pero sí vino al introducirse una mejor esperanza (Rm. 5, 2). Superioridad del sacerdocio de Cristo

Aquí vemos, con más claridad aún que respecto de los santos y la Santísima Virgen, cómo Jesús no solo rogó por nosotros en vida (Jn. 17, 9 ss.) y prometió rogar después (Jn. 14, 16) sino que está rogando permanentemente por nosotros, siendo esta precisamente su misión como Sacerdote (v. 26).
26 Y tal Sumo Sacerdote nos convenía: santo, inocente, inmaculado, apartado de los pecadores y encumbrado sobre los cielos1,
