Otros autores no comparten esta opinión, observando que en aquellas ocasiones el Señor resucitado no comió cordero ni bebió vino, sino que tomó pescado, pan y miel, y que, lejos de sentarse a la mesa en un banquete triunfante con sus discípulos, tuvo que seguir combatiéndoles la incredulidad con que dudaban de su Redención (cf. Lc. 24, 13; Hch. 1, 3 y notas).

15 Habiendo, pues, almorzado, Jesús dijo a Simón Pedro: “Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas tú más que estos?” Le respondió: “Sí, Señor, Tú sabes que yo te quiero”. Él le dijo: “Apacienta mis corderos”1.

Las tres preguntas sucesivas quizá recuerdan a Pedro las tres veces que había negado a su Maestro. Jesús usa dos veces el verbo amar (agapás me) y Pedro contesta siempre con otro verbo: te quiero (filo se). La tercera vez Jesús toma el verbo de Pedro: me quieres (filéis me). También usa el Señor verbos distintos: boske y póimaine, que traducimos respectivamente apacienta y pastorea (así también de la Torre), teniendo el segundo un sentido más dinámico: llevar a los pastos. En cuanto a corderos (arnía) y ovejas (próbata) —el probátia: ovejuelas, que algunos prefieren la segunda vez, no añade nada (cf. Pirot)— indican matices que han sido interpretados muy diversamente. Según Teofilacto, los corderos serían las almas principiantes, y las ovejas las proficientes. Según otros, representan la totalidad de los fieles, incluso los pastores de la Iglesia. Pirot hace notar la relación con el redil del Buen Pastor (10, 1-16; cf. Ga. 2, 7-10). El Concilio Vaticano, el 18 de julio de 1870, invocó este pasaje al proclamar el universal primado de Pedro (Denz. 1822), cuya tradición testifica autorizadamente S. Ireneo, obispo y mártir. Ello no obstante es de notar la humildad con que Pedro sigue llamándose simplemente copresbítero de sus hermanos en el apostolado (1 Pe. 5, 1; cf. Hch. 10, 23 y 26 y notas), a pesar de ser el Pastor supremo.
16 Le volvió a decir por segunda vez: “Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas?” Le respondió: “Sí, Señor, Tú sabes que te quiero”. Le dijo: “Pastorea mis ovejas”.

18 “En verdad, en verdad, te digo, cuando eras más joven, te ponías a ti mismo el ceñidor, e ibas adonde querías. Pero cuando seas viejo, extenderás los brazos, y otro te pondrá el ceñidor, y te llevará adonde no quieres”1.

Agustín interpreta este privilegio de Jesús para su íntimo amigo, diciendo: “Tú (Pedro) Sígueme, sufriendo conmigo los males temporales; él (Juan), en cambio, quédese como está, hasta que Yo venga a darle los bienes eternos”. La Iglesia celebra, además del 27 de diciembre, como fiesta de este gran Santo y modelo de suma perfección cristiana, el 6 de mayo como fecha del martirio en que S. Juan, sumergido en una caldera de aceite hirviente, salvó milagrosamente su vida. Durante mucho tiempo se creyó que solo se había dormido en su sepulcro (Fillion).
23 Y así se propagó entre los hermanos el rumor de que este discípulo no ha de morir. Sin embargo, Jesús no le había dicho que él no debía morir, sino: “Si me place que él se quede hasta mi vuelta, ¿qué te importa a ti?”

25 Jesús hizo también muchas otras cosas: si se quisiera ponerlas por escrito, una por una creo que el mundo no bastaría para contener los libros que se podrían escribir1.

El mundo no bastaría: la Sabiduría divina es un mar sin orillas (Si. 24, 32 y nota). Jesús nos ha revelado los secretos que eternamente oyó del Padre (15, 15), y tras Él vendría Pablo, el cual escribió tres décadas antes que Juan y explayó, para el Cuerpo místico, el misterio que había estado oculto por todos los siglos (Ef. 3, 9 ss.; Col. 1, 26). Quiso Jesús que, por inspiración del Espíritu Santo (15, 26; 16, 13) se nos transmitiesen en el Evangelio sus palabras y hechos; no todos, pero sí lo suficiente “para que creyendo tengamos vida en su nombre” (20, 30 s.; Lc. 1, 41. Sobre este depósito qué nos ha sido legado “para que también nos gocemos” con aquellos que fueron testigos de las maravillas de Cristo (1 Jn. 1, 1-4), se han escrito abundantísimos libros, y ello no obstante, Pío XII acaba de recordarnos que: “no pocas cosas... apenas fueron explicadas por los expositores de los pasados siglos”, por lo cual “sin razón andan diciendo algunos... que nada le queda por añadir, al exégeta católico de nuestro tiempo, a lo ya dicho por la antigüedad cristiana”. Que “nadie se admire de que aún no se hayan resuelto y vencido todas las dificultades y que hasta el día de hoy inquieten, y no poco, las inteligencias de los exegetas católicos, graves cuestiones”, y que “hay que esperar que también estas... terminarán por aparecer a plena luz, gracias al constante esfuerzo”, por lo cual “el intérprete católico... en modo alguno debe arredrarse de arremeter una y otra vez las difíciles cuestiones todavía sin solución”. Y en consecuencia el Papa dispone que “todos los restantes hijos de la Iglesia... odien aquel modo menos prudente de pensar según el cual todo lo que es nuevo es por ello mismo rechazable, o por lo menos sospechoso. Porque deben tener sobre todo ante los ojos que... entre las muchas cosas que se proponen en los Libros sagrados, legales, históricos, sapienciales y proféticos, solo muy pocas cosas hay cuyo sentido haya sido declarado par la autoridad de la Iglesia, y no son muchas más aquellas en las que sea unánime la sentencia de los santos Padres. Quedan, pues, muchas otras, y gravísimas, en cuya discusión y explicación se puede y debe ejercer libremente la agudeza e ingenio de los intérpretes católicos” (Encíclica “Divino Afflante Spíritu”, septiembre de 1943).
