Chapter 5
(Romans 8:18–27)
1 Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is dismantled, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.

στενάζομεν,stenazomenwe groan,G4727V-PAI-1P οἰκητήριονoikētēriondwellingG3613N-ASN οὐρανοῦouranouheavenG3772N-GSM ἐπενδύσασθαιependusasthaito be clothed withG1902V-AMN ἐπιποθοῦντες·epipothounteslonging;G1971V-PAP-NPM 3 because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked.
ἐκδυσάμενοιekdusamenoihaving put offG1562V-AAP-NPM γυμνοὶgumnoinakedG1131A-NPM εὑρεθησόμεθα.heurethēsomethawe will be found.G2147V-FPI-1P 4 So while we are in this tent, we groan under our burdens, because we do not wish to be unclothed but clothed, so that our mortality may be swallowed up by life.

κατεργασάμενοςkatergasamenoshaving preparedG2716V-ADP-NSM θεός,theos[is] God,G2316N-NSM-T δοὺςdoushaving givenG1325V-2AAP-NSM ἀρραβῶναarrabōnapledgeG0728N-ASM πνεύματος.¶pneumatosSpirit.G4151GN-GSN 6 Therefore we are always confident, although we know that while we are at home in the body, we are away from the Lord.

πίστεωςpisteōsfaithG4102GN-GSF περιπατοῦμεν,peripatoumenwe walk,G4043V-PAI-1P εἴδους,eidoussight,G1491N-GSN 8 We are confident, then, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

φιλοτιμούμεθα,philotimoumethawe are ambitious,G5389V-PNI-1P ἐνδημοῦντεςendēmountesbeing at homeG1736V-PAP-NPM ἐκδημοῦντες,ekdēmountesbeing away,G1553V-PAP-NPM εὐάρεστοιeuarestoiwell-pleasingG2101A-NPM εἶναι·einaito be;G1511V-PAN 10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive his due for the things done in the body, whether good or bad.

11 Therefore, since we know what it means to fear the Lord, we try to persuade men. What we are is clear to God, and I hope it is clear to your conscience as well.

Instead, we are giving you an occasion to be proud of us, so that you can answer those who take pride in appearances rather than in the heart.

ἐξέστημεν,exestēmenwe are crazy,G1839V-2AAI-1P θεῷ·theō[it is] for God;G2316N-DSM-T σωφρονοῦμεν,sōphronoumenwe are sober-mindedG4993V-PAI-1P ὑμῖν.humin[it is] for you.G4771P-2DP 14 For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that One died for all, therefore all died.

Although we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer.

Behold, the new has come!

18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:

And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

We implore you on behalf of Christ: Be reconciled to God.
