Chapter 5
Absent from the Body and at Home with the Lord
1 For we know that if our earthly house, the tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made by hands, eternal in the heavens.
ΟἴδαμενOidamenWe knowG6063V-RAI-1P ἐπίγειοςepigeiosearthlyG1919A-NSF σκήνουςskēnoustentG4636N-GSN καταλυθῇ,kataluthēashall be destroyed,G2647V-APS-3S οἰκοδομὴνoikodomēna buildingG3619N-ASF ἔχομεν,echomenwe have,G2192V-PAI-1P οἰκίανoikiana houseG3614GN-ASF ἀχειροποίητονacheiropoiētonnot made with handsG0886A-ASF αἰώνιονaiōnioneternalG0166A-ASF οὐρανοῖς.ouranoisheavens.G3772N-DPM 2 For indeed, in this house we groan, because we1 desire to put on our dwelling from heaven,

3 if indeed, even after we1 have taken it off,2 we will not be found naked.

- A number of important early manuscripts read “have put it on” here
4 For indeed we who are in this tent groan, being burdened ⌞for this reason, that⌟1 we do not want to be unclothed, but to be clothed, in order that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.
ὄντεςontesbeingG1510V-PAP-NPM σκήνειskēneitentG4636N-DSN στενάζομενstenazomenwe groanG4727V-PAI-1P βαρούμενοι,baroumenoibeing burdened,G0916V-PPP-NPM θέλομενthelomenwe do wishG2309V-PAI-1P ἐκδύσασθαιekdusasthaito be unclothedG1562V-AMN ἐπενδύσασθαι,ependusasthaito be clothed,G1902V-AMN καταποθῇkatapothēamay be swallowed upG2666V-APS-3S θνητὸνthnētonmortalG2349A-NSN ζωῆς.¶zōēslife.G2222N-GSF - Literally “in that”
5 Now the one who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the down payment, the Spirit.

7 for we live by faith, not by sight—
πίστεωςpisteōsfaithG4102GN-GSF περιπατοῦμεν,peripatoumenwe walk,G4043V-PAI-1P εἴδους,eidoussight,G1491N-GSN 8 so we are confident and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord.
