  1. 11. Eran de mejor índole, porque no eran tan orgullosos, y creían lo que la Escritura decía sobre Cristo. Los fieles de Berea nos muestran con qué espíritu debemos leer la Sagrada Biblia, esa “carta de Dios a los hombres” (Gregorio Magno), y son un ejemplo de cómo las Sagradas Letras del Antiguo Testamento eran tenidas en máxima veneración como fuente de doctrina (véase 16, 32 y 34 y notas). “Investigad las Escrituras... ellas son las que dan testimonio de Mí”, dice Jesús (Jn. 5, 39). Bien se explica, pues, esta precaución de los habitantes de Berea: es la prudencia sobrenatural del que, por encima de todo, busca la verdad (cf. 1 Ts. 5, 21; 1 Jn. 4, 1), para poder guardarse de los falsos profetas que siempre se presentan con piel de oveja (Mt. 7, 15), y de los falsos apóstoles que se disfrazan de Cristo como el misma Satanás se disfraza de ángel de luz (2 Co. 11, 13). La indiferencia que a veces notamos, en esta materia tan grave, no es sino esa falta de amor a la verdad, que es lo que hará caer en las seducciones poderosas de la mentira, según revela S. Pablo al hablar del Anticristo, (2 Ts. 2, 10 ss.).

Quien haya leído los primeros capítulos de 1 Co., podrá adivinarlo fácilmente, pues allí aprendemos que Jesús, es decir la Vida que vino en forma de Luz (Jn. 1, 4), después de ser escándalo para los judíos, sería para los gentiles (greco-romanos) tontería y necedad. Lo primero, lo vimos cumplirse en vida de Él mismo; lo segundo lo veremos en este capítulo que es de un interés insuperable, porque lo mismo sigue repitiéndose cada día, en medio de esto que aún llamamos civilización cristiana. Se consumía: El griego da la idea de paroxismo. “El celo de tu casa me devora”, se había dicho de Cristo (Sal. 68, 10; Jn. 2, 17). ¿Qué ansias no sentiría el humilde discípulo al verse, con las manos llenas de verdades, frente a hombres tan calificados para lo intelectual... y tan ciegos, tan indigentes, tan miserables en lo espiritual? Veámoslo lanzarse, como un león suelto, a la disputa con los maestros, tanto de Israel como de Grecia (v. 17 y 18) en aquella “Ciudad-Luz” de la antigüedad. Ya veremos después cómo lo escuchan (v. 32 ss.). Cubierta de ídolos: “La Acrópolis es algo así como un templo todo cubierto de santuarios dedicados a Diónisos, a Esculapio, a Afrodita, a la Tierra, a Ceres, a la Victoria Antera, etc.”.
