Jesús ante Pilato y Herodes
1 Entonces, levantándose toda la asamblea, lo llevaron a Pilato;

3 Pilato lo interrogó y dijo: “¿Eres Tú el rey de los judíos?” Respondiole y dijo: “Tú lo dices”.

Así Pilato creía poder librarse del apuro. Por tener su domicilio en Cafarnaúm. Jesús era súbdito de Herodes Antipas, tetrarca de Galilea, el cual estaba en Jerusalén para la fiesta de Pascua. Este era hijo de Herodes el Grande (Mt. 2, 3) y tío de Herodes Agripa I, que hizo matar a Santiago el Mayor (Hch. 12, 1 ss.), y cuyo hijo, el “rey Agripa” (II) escuchó a Pablo en Hch. 25, 13 ss.
8 Herodes, al ver a Jesús, se alegró mucho, porque hacía largo tiempo que deseaba verlo por lo que oía decir de Él, y esperaba verle hacer algún milagro.

Jesús quiso agotar la humillación hasta ser pospuesto a un asesino. Había tomado sobre sí los delitos de todos los hombres (cf. Ez. 4, 4 y nota) y no le bastó ser contado entre los malhechores (22, 37; Is. 53, 12), fue peor que ellos, “gusano y no hombre” (Sal. 21, 6). Cf. Flp. 2, 7 s. y nota. La idea de nuestra muerte se endulza así indeciblemente al pensar que aceptando de buen grado, como merecido, ese transitorio envilecimiento de nuestro cuerpo comido por los gusanos de la “corrupción” (Hch. 13, 36), Podemos en espíritu “asimilarnos a la muerte de Él” (Flp. 3, 10), que si no vio corrupción en el sueño del sepulcro (Hch. 2, 31; 13, 37), la sufrió vivo en su cuerpo santísimo escupido, desangrado y expuesto desnudo entre dos patibularios, a la irrisión del público que a verlo “meneaba la cabeza” (Sal. 21, 8), no de compasión, sino de asco.
19 Barrabás había sido encarcelado a causa de una sedición en la ciudad y por homicidio.

La misma tradición narra que también María, la santísima madre de Jesús, acompañada de S. Juan, se encontró con su Hijo en la vía dolorosa.
29 porque vienen días, en que se dirá: ¡Felices las estériles y las entrañas que no engendraron, y los pechos que no amamantaron!

La crucifixión
32 Conducían también a otros dos malhechores con Él para ser suspendidos.
