Según la opinión más común entre los exégetas católicos, este Salmo, como el 73, deplora la suerte del Templo y de la Ciudad santa hollada por los gentiles y la humillación del pueblo hebreo, que dura hasta hoy según lo anunció Jesús (Lucas 21, 24). Y así como en los Salmos 74 y 75 Dios responde a ese lamento con las promesas de restauración, así también el Salmo 79 contiene la esperanza de esta. La atribución al tiempo de los Macabeos ha sido abandonada, como en tantos otros Salmos, pues este ya se recitaba entonces como más antiguo (cf. I Macabeos 7, 17, que cita los versículos 2 s.) y se reconoce que la destrucción de la ciudad por Antíoco no fue tan grave como lo que aquí se menciona. San Atanasio y otros veían en este un Salmo profético del tiempo de David, y la liturgia judía lo recita aún cada viernes junto al Muro de las Lamentaciones, último recuerdo del Templo desaparecido desde la destrucción de la ciudad por Tito, que Jesús anunció en Mateo 24. La venganza: Para defender este pasaje contra los que se escandalizan de él, un exégeta protestante se ha fundado en que “los salmistas eran hombres” y en la injusticia y brutalidad sufridas por el judaísmo. La explicación es puramente humana y poco sobrenatural, como si la oración de este Salmo y de tantos otros análogos no fuese inspirada. Mejor lo explicaba ya San Agustín diciendo que no desea el salmista que vengan males sino que presagia la ineludible acción de la justicia y vaticina las cosas futuras. En efecto, los profetas anuncian muchas veces tal venganza (cf. Joel 3, 1 ss.) y en Apocalipsis 6, 10 y 19, 2 encontramos igual expresión, acompañada esta vez de júbilo en el cielo. Los que después de esto se escandalizasen, lejos de defender la Ley de Dios (cf. Mateo 5, 39-48; 18, 21 ss., etc.) estarían juzgando a Dios, lo cual es una soberbia que Él no tolera a pesar de ser tan bueno con los demás pecadores. Septuplicado (versículo 12): Cf.
