  1. 1. Este Salmo, que comienza como el Salmo 6, es el tercero de los siete penitenciales, y contiene la más honda descripción de un alma penitente, víctima del dolor y de la persecución. Los santos Padres han visto en él muy de veras la oración de Cristo doliente, víctima de los pecados del mundo, los cuales Él ha tomado sobre sí (versículos 4, 5 y 19) para poder purgarlos. El versículo 21 muestra que es un santo quien habla en él, o sea que aquellas culpas no eran suyas. La Vulgata agrega al epígrafe las palabras “en Sábado” , probablemente para indicar que el Salmo se recitaba durante la parte de la ofrenda llamada “recuerdo” (Levítico 2, 2; 24, 7), sacrificio de harina y aceite que se quemaba sobre el altar. Según San Agustín y San Gregorio, significarían estas palabras: “para recuerdo de la quietud perdida junto con el estado de inocencia, o de la prometida en la resurrección de los justos”.

  1. 6 ss. Insensatez: Pecado. En el Antiguo Testamento, especialmente en los Libros sapienciales, el pecado es llamado “necedad”, “locura”, porque no la hay más grande que sublevarse contra la Omnipotencia, la Sabiduría y la Bondad del Padre celestial. Es Jesús quien así se proclama necio y culpable, en lugar nuestro. Nosotros, en cambio, queremos siempre aparecer dignos de aprobación y aun de aplauso (cf. Juan 5, 44 y nota); y si alguien nos llama necio, consideramos que el “honor” nos obliga a rebelarnos. ¡Feliz quien comprende el abismo que hay entre el mundo y Cristo! Sobre la falacia del concepto mundano del honor, véase Ezequiel 16, 55 y nota. En los versículos que siguen tenemos una de las más intensas pinturas que existen de la sacratísima Pasión de Jesús, que nos ayuda grandemente a unirnos a Él, a mirarlo y admirarlo como el Santo por excelencia, cuyos ejemplos y lecciones nos ilustran y santifican infinitamente más que si estudiáramos a todos los santos. Hablando a su clero el sabio y piadoso Mons. Keppler, buen conocedor de la Sagrada Escritura, le hacía notar cómo ella se empeña en mostrarnos, en contraste con la conducta de Jesús, siempre acertada y aleccionadora (cf.   1. 19 ss. Él contraste con lo que sigue define maravillosamente la posición de Cristo, el Redentor. El mismo que es hostilizado porque se empeña en lo bueno (versículo 21) y es odiado sin causa (versículo 20), se presenta aquí como si fuese pecador (cf. versículo 5). ¿Qué culpas son esas sino las nuestras? ¡A Él correspondió en grado sumo la bienaventuranza de ser perseguido por causa de la justicia! (Mateo 5, 10). Si al Salmo 36 le discuten muchos modernos el origen davídico, no obstante la afirmación del epígrafe, suponiendo que, por su estilo y forma, puede ser “postexílico”, la presente oración nos parece en cambio muy propia del Rey Profeta que, ya inocente y perseguido, ya culpable y arrepentido como en el Salmo 50, expresó como nadie, junto a los esplendores del Rey venturo, los más íntimos lamentos del alma de Cristo.
