Chapter 4
1 What advantage then shall we say that Abraham our father had as to the flesh?

But he hath no ground of boasting before God.

"Abraham had faith in God, and it was accounted unto him as righteousness."

τῷtōTo the [one]G3588T-DSM ἐργαζομένῳergazomenōworkingG2038V-PNP-DSM μισθὸςmisthosrewardG3408N-NSM λογίζεταιlogizetaiis reckonedG3049V-PNI-3S κατὰkataaccording toG2596PREP χάρινcharingraceG5485N-ASF κατὰkataaccording toG2596PREP ὀφείλημα·opheilēmadebt;G3783N-ASN 5 but to him who without performing works hath faith in him who accepteth as righteous one that hath been ungodly, his faith is accounted as righteousness;

μακάριοςmakariosblessed [is]G3107A-NSM λογίσηταιlogisētaimay reckonG3049V-ADS-3S κύριοςkurios[the] LordG2962GN-NSM-T ἁμαρτίαν.¶hamartiansin.G0266N-ASF 9 Doth this blessedness belong to the circumcised alone, or to the uncircumcised also? For we are saying that Abraham’s faith was accounted as righteousness.
μακαρισμὸςmakarismosblessingG3108N-NSM οὗτοςhoutosthisG3778D-NSM περιτομὴνperitomēncircumcisionG4061N-ASF ἀκροβυστίαν;akrobustianuncircumcision?G0203N-ASF λέγομενlegomenWe are sayingG3004GV-PAI-1P ἐλογίσθηelogisthēwas creditedG3049V-API-3S ἈβραὰμAbraamto AbrahamG0011N-DSM-P δικαιοσύνην.dikaiosunēnrighteousness.G1343N-ASF 10 How then was it so accounted? After his circumcision, or while he was uncircumcised? Not after he was circumcised, but while he was uncircumcised.
ἐλογίσθη;elogisthēwas it credited?G3049V-API-3S περιτομῇperitomēacircumcisionG4061N-DSF ὄντιontibeingG1510V-PAP-DSM ἀκροβυστίᾳ;akrobustiauncircumcision?G0203N-DSF περιτομῇperitomēacircumcisionG4061N-DSF ἀκροβυστίᾳ·akrobustiauncircumcision;G0203N-DSF 11 And he received the outward sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while he was uncircumcised; that he might be the father of all the uncircumcised who have faith, so that righteousness might be put to their account also;

νόμουnomou[the] Law [are]G3551N-GSM κληρονόμοι,klēronomoiheirs,G2818N-NPM κεκένωταιkekenōtaihas been made voidG2758V-RPI-3S κατήργηταιkatērgētaihas been nullifiedG2673V-RPI-3S ἐπαγγελία·epangeliapromise;G1860N-NSF 15 For the Law is the cause of wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression.
