Chapter 4
1 What, then, may we say that Abraham, our father after the flesh, has got?
ἐροῦμενeroumenwill we sayG4483V-FAI-1P εὑρηκέναιheurēkenaito have discoveredG2147V-RAN ἈβραὰμAbraamAbrahamG0011N-ASM-P προπάτοραpropatoraancestorG6074N-ASM κατὰkataaccording toG2596PREP σάρκα;sarka[the] flesh?G4561N-ASF 2 For if Abraham got righteousness by works, he has reason for pride; but not before God.
ἈβραὰμAbraamAbrahamG0011N-NSM-P ἔργωνergōnworksG2041N-GPN ἐδικαιώθη,edikaiōthēwas justified,G1344V-API-3S ἔχειecheihe hasG2192V-PAI-3S καύχημαkauchēmaground of boastingG2745N-ASN θεόν.theonGod.G2316N-ASM-T 3 But what does it say in the holy Writings? And Abraham had faith in God, and it was put to his account as righteousness.

τῷtōTo the [one]G3588T-DSM ἐργαζομένῳergazomenōworkingG2038V-PNP-DSM μισθὸςmisthosrewardG3408N-NSM λογίζεταιlogizetaiis reckonedG3049V-PNI-3S κατὰkataaccording toG2596PREP χάρινcharingraceG5485N-ASF κατὰkataaccording toG2596PREP ὀφείλημα·opheilēmadebt;G3783N-ASN 5 But to him who without working has faith in him who gives righteousness to the evil-doer, his faith is put to his account as righteousness.
τῷtōTo the [one]G3588T-DSM ἐργαζομένῳ,ergazomenōworking,G2038V-PNP-DSM πιστεύοντιpisteuontibelievingG4100V-PAP-DSM τὸνtonthe [One]G3588T-ASM δικαιοῦνταdikaiountajustifyingG1344V-PAP-ASM ἀσεβῆ,asebēungodly,G0765A-ASM λογίζεταιlogizetaiis reckonedG3049V-PNI-3S αὐτοῦautouof himG0846P-GSM δικαιοσύνην.dikaiosunēnrighteousness.G1343N-ASF 6 As David says that there is a blessing on the man to whose account God puts righteousness without works, saying,

μακάριοιmakarioiBlessed [are]G3107A-NPM ὧνhōnthey of whomG3739R-GPM ἀφέθησανaphethēsanare forgivenG0863HV-API-3P ἀνομίαιanomiailawless deedsG0458N-NPF ἐπεκαλύφθησανepekaluphthēsanare coveredG1943V-API-3P ἁμαρτίαι·hamartiaisins;G0266N-NPF 8 Happy is the man against whom no sin is recorded by the Lord.
μακάριοςmakariosblessed [is]G3107A-NSM λογίσηταιlogisētaimay reckonG3049V-ADS-3S κύριοςkurios[the] LordG2962GN-NSM-T ἁμαρτίαν.¶hamartiansin.G0266N-ASF 9 Is this blessing, then, for the circumcision only, or in the same way for those who have not circumcision? for we say that the faith of Abraham was put to his account as righteousness.
μακαρισμὸςmakarismosblessingG3108N-NSM οὗτοςhoutosthisG3778D-NSM περιτομὴνperitomēncircumcisionG4061N-ASF ἀκροβυστίαν;akrobustianuncircumcision?G0203N-ASF λέγομενlegomenWe are sayingG3004GV-PAI-1P ἐλογίσθηelogisthēwas creditedG3049V-API-3S ἈβραὰμAbraamto AbrahamG0011N-DSM-P δικαιοσύνην.dikaiosunēnrighteousness.G1343N-ASF 10 How, then, was it judged? when he had circumcision, or when he had it not? Not when he had it, but when he did not have it:
ἐλογίσθη;elogisthēwas it credited?G3049V-API-3S περιτομῇperitomēacircumcisionG4061N-DSF ὄντιontibeingG1510V-PAP-DSM ἀκροβυστίᾳ;akrobustiauncircumcision?G0203N-DSF περιτομῇperitomēacircumcisionG4061N-DSF ἀκροβυστίᾳ·akrobustiauncircumcision;G0203N-DSF 11 And he was given the sign of circumcision as a witness of the faith which he had before he underwent circumcision: so that he might be the father of all those who have faith, though they have not circumcision, and so that righteousness might be put to their account;

νόμουnomou[the] Law [are]G3551N-GSM κληρονόμοι,klēronomoiheirs,G2818N-NPM κεκένωταιkekenōtaihas been made voidG2758V-RPI-3S κατήργηταιkatērgētaihas been nullifiedG2673V-RPI-3S ἐπαγγελία·epangeliapromise;G1860N-NSF 15 For the outcome of the law is wrath; but where there is no law it will not be broken.
ὀργὴνorgēnwrathG3709N-ASF κατεργάζεται·katergazetaibrings;G2716V-PNI-3S ἔστινestinthere isG1510V-PAI-3S νόμος,nomoslaw,G3551N-NSM οὐδὲoudeneither [is]G3761CONJ-N παράβασις.parabasistransgression.G3847N-NSF 16 For this reason it is of faith, so that it may be through grace; and so that the word of God may be certain to all the seed; not only to that which is of the law, but to that which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,

ἐλογίσθηelogisthēit was creditedG3049V-API-3S δικαιοσύνην.¶dikaiosunēnrighteousness.G1343N-ASF 23 Now, it was not because of him only that this was said,
ἐγράφηegraphēit was writtenG1125V-2API-3S δι᾽di᾽on account ofG1223PREP μόνονmononaloneG3441A-ASM ἐλογίσθηelogisthēit was creditedG3049V-API-3S αὐτῷ,autōto him,G0846P-DSM 24 But for us in addition, to whose account it will be put, if we have faith in him who made Jesus our Lord come back again from the dead,
