Chapter 4
1 What then, it may be asked, are we to say about Abraham, the ancestor of our nation?

Yes, but not before God.

τῷtōTo the [one]G3588T-DSM ἐργαζομένῳergazomenōworkingG2038V-PNP-DSM μισθὸςmisthosrewardG3408N-NSM λογίζεταιlogizetaiis reckonedG3049V-PNI-3S κατὰkataaccording toG2596PREP χάρινcharingraceG5485N-ASF κατὰkataaccording toG2596PREP ὀφείλημα·opheilēmadebt;G3783N-ASN 5 while, as for the man who does not rely upon his obedience, but has faith in him who can pronounce the godless righteous, his faith is regarded by God as righteousness.

μακάριοςmakariosblessed [is]G3107A-NSM λογίσηταιlogisētaimay reckonG3049V-ADS-3S κύριοςkurios[the] LordG2962GN-NSM-T ἁμαρτίαν.¶hamartiansin.G0266N-ASF 9 Is this blessing, then, pronounced upon the circumcised only or upon the uncircumcised as well? We say that — ‘Abraham’s faith was regarded by God as righteousness.’

After his circumcision or before it?
ἐλογίσθη;elogisthēwas it credited?G3049V-API-3S περιτομῇperitomēacircumcisionG4061N-DSF ὄντιontibeingG1510V-PAP-DSM ἀκροβυστίᾳ;akrobustiauncircumcision?G0203N-DSF περιτομῇperitomēacircumcisionG4061N-DSF ἀκροβυστίᾳ·akrobustiauncircumcision;G0203N-DSF 11 Not after, but before. And it was as a sign of this that he received the rite of circumcision — to attest the righteousness due to the faith of an uncircumcised man — in order that he might be the father of all who have faith in God even when uncircumcised, that they also may be regarded by God as righteous;

νόμουnomou[the] Law [are]G3551N-GSM κληρονόμοι,klēronomoiheirs,G2818N-NPM κεκένωταιkekenōtaihas been made voidG2758V-RPI-3S κατήργηταιkatērgētaihas been nullifiedG2673V-RPI-3S ἐπαγγελία·epangeliapromise;G1860N-NSF 15 Law entails punishment; but, where no Law exists, no breach of it is possible.
ὀργὴνorgēnwrathG3709N-ASF κατεργάζεται·katergazetaibrings;G2716V-PNI-3S ἔστινestinthere isG1510V-PAI-3S νόμος,nomoslaw,G3551N-NSM οὐδὲoudeneither [is]G3761CONJ-N παράβασις.parabasistransgression.G3847N-NSF 16 That is why all is made to depend upon faith, that all may be God’s gift, and in order that the fulfilment of the promise may be made certain for all Abraham’s descendants — not only for those who take their stand on the Law, but also for those who take their stand on the faith of Abraham. (He is the Father of us all;

ἐλογίσθηelogisthēit was creditedG3049V-API-3S δικαιοσύνην.¶dikaiosunēnrighteousness.G1343N-ASF 23 Now these words — ‘it was regarded as righteousness’ — were not written with reference to Abraham only;
ἐγράφηegraphēit was writtenG1125V-2API-3S δι᾽di᾽on account ofG1223PREP μόνονmononaloneG3441A-ASM ἐλογίσθηelogisthēit was creditedG3049V-API-3S αὐτῷ,autōto him,G0846P-DSM 24 but also with reference to us. Our faith, too, will be regarded by God in the same light, if we have faith in him who raised Jesus, our Lord, from the dead;
